Have you heard of them?
They're the forefathers of grind, and technical death metal, from New York city.
Their album Effigy of the Forgotten blew my mind when I first heard it in 1991. Nothing else like it at the time.
Nothing else that heavy, complex, or brutal existed at the time.
Completely changed my idea of what music was, and could be. All the best bands and musicians do that.
Can't wait to hear all of this new release, but it makes me sad, because it's a reminder that Frank Mullen, the vocalist, really is retired. He was one of the originators of the death metal growls and until this day remains one of the best death metal vocalists around.
Suffocation is still recording and touring with a different vocalist, and I'll still keep seeing them. This just puts an end to that awesome first chapter.
