two nights ago i saw 'jason vws. freddie'
now, i must say i've never seen any of the jason movies. i'm sure i saw nightmare on elm street at some point but i've never been a huge horror buff.
but, my friend jes wanted to see the movie and her bf wasn' t up to it so i said i'd tag along.
damn, am i glad i did. that movie was fucking hilarous. it wasn't even scary. sure, there was gore...there has to be gore in a movie like that. but it was a brilliant comedy. i loved it.
go see it
oh...and last night. damn, last night was rokkin like dokken. a bunch of my friends got together for a benefit show to alleviate the pain of some of my medical bills.
five bands -- the malefactors (who hadn't played together since my shop closed down 2 1/2 years ago), fortitude, another round, the four shames and coldspot 8 all played.
fortitude started the set off with loud as fuck old school hardcore. these guys played at my shop all the frigging time and were always good. last night they were frigging incredible. tonite they are playing with shai hulud at the social.
the malefactors played next and sounded like they hadn't missed a day. the fact of the matter was they only practiced three times getting ready for tonites gig.
but, damn, you'd never have known it. they delivered there punk as fuck old school sound like few bands can. it was nice for them because they also played at my shop tons of times in the past. but, at that time orlando was pretty fucking pathetic about the old school sound and most of the kids stayed out front while they played. last night was a different story. tons of skins and punks slamming to the three chord punk rock of the malefactors.
next came the oi! sounds of another round. this band is relatively new as bands go. they've probably been together in this lineup for about a year. they played classic singalong street punk anthems as well as some original tunes that many of the audience knew also. these guys have definitely made some friends over their months of playing. the hudson falcons have taken them under their wing and include them on almost all of their florida shows when they tour.
the four shames took the stage after another round to deliver finely tuned garage punk. the four shames features two members of the now defunct hate bombs. i'll admit this is one musical genre that i'm not as exposed to as i'd like...but, damn did they rock the house. their drummer is also the lead vocalist and has stage energy that five year olds would be jealous of. constantly standing on his rig and beating his skins while singing. fanfuckingtastic.
the last band of the night was coldspot 8. this is the veteran band of orlando. they played their first show at my shop back in 97 and have continued to play regularly with a fairly consistent lineup ever since. sure they've had some members move out of town -- but, being an eight piece band their core has stayed regular over the years. any member that leaves the band usually does so to move out of town for advancement of some personal sort. coldspot 8 plays classic jamaican ska, soul and rocksteady. this was the perfect transitional ender for the evening. everybody dancing to the ska peacfully and happily during their set.
a great fucking night.
