Yesterday, my girl and I went to a bar to hang out with a friend of ours. At his table, there were several different people thereit was a conglomerate of friends-of-friends-of-friends, basically. I knew almost everyone, except for two girls that unfortunately sat next to me. I had the privilege of hearing every comment they made and every conversation they had with each other. These included:
"I can't believe Johnny Depp was #5hes so hot!! He shoulda been #1" (some stupid magazine article discussion)
"I'd fuck that guy in Ween
"I can't believe he wrote that shit in Friendster, oh my god!!!"
It was obvious that these two girls were getting louder as they drank their second beer. The girl sitting next to me said one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. She was ironically talking about how stupid "this guy" was:
"He didn't know that Caesar was in 'Gladiator'. HELLOOOdid you not hear them cheering? I mean, come on!"
Oh where to beginLet's start with the fact that "Gladiator" was not based on a true story. If you look up Roman history, there's no record of Rome being ruled by Marcus Aurelius or Commodus.
Secondly, I don't recall the crowd in the arena scenes ever cheering "Caesar"they chanted Joaquin Phoenix's character name, Commodusuntil reverting to "Maximus"...much like the Russian crowd did in "Rocky IV".
Most importantly, do you realize that there wasn't just one Caesar? "Caesar" is a moniker for a Roman dictator. That's like saying, "He didn't know that THE King was in Braveheart. HA!" Although the way you say it, I bet you were thinking of the most famous CaesarJulius. If you paid attention during class instead of doing your nails or listing on paper who you'd fuck in the entertainment industry, you would have learned that that Julius Caesar was assassinated long before the movie was supposed to have taken place. You might also have discovered this if you've read a play by a little known writer: Shakespeare.
What irritated me more than anything was tone and attitude. It was the same "I am smarter than you" attitude a lot of college kids have because they learned a tiny little nugget of information in some bullshit elective course they took. "Hey, forget Freudyou should read Lacan sometime" WHY? What real world application is knowing about Lacan's theories of psychoanalysis? None, Chatty McStarfucker. You're just a stupid bitch who thinks just because she's in college she's suddenly full of knowledge, when just 2 years ago your biggest concern was whether Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were going to make it or not. Fuck off.
