I heard spring peepers tonight for the first time of the season. That, for me, is the first true sign of spring. Spring has seemed to be especially slow to arrive this year, and the dreary, cold, damp weather has made me feel kinda depressed. I'm so stoked for warm weather to finally arrive.
Here is what a spring peeper looks like:
although they are rarely seen. They sound almost like crickets chirping at night. You can hear them wherever water(a lake, pond, or vernal pool) is nearby.
The noise-making is all about attracting a mate. I generally tend to get as horny as any spring peeper this time of year, too. Maybe it's some kind of primordial urge to procreate, hard-wired into the DNA and triggered by the lengthening daylight, but I digress...
