For this week's blog homework, we will be covering my 13 favorite horror films!
First off, I feel like this blog homework was MADE for me! Horror flicks are my jam! I'm always looking for new ones to watch, and I'm always down for giving recommendations!
I think it's important to mention that my list definitely isn't in any particular order.
1) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
One of the first horror flicks I remember watching growing up! There's just something about Robert Englund and the way he portrays Freddy that is just top notch. I love the sarcasm, the terrible word play, and how Freddy loves a good game of cat and mouse before killing his victims. Let's also not forget that there's a young Johnny Depp to oogle.
2) A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Now I know what you're thinking, guys. How can I have two favorites from the same franchise? Y'all, these movies are fucking gems! (Well, maybe not the second one....but that's a different story for a different day). There's so much to love about this one. I love that they brought Nancy back. Seeing the giant Freddy worm has always been one of my favorite scenes. If you've ever seen this one, all I need to say is " Welcome to Primetime, Bitch!" , and you'll know exactly what scene I'm talking about. I think this one also gets a few bonus points for Dokken's "Dream Warriors".
3) The Awakening (2011)
Although this one isn't a downright "horror flick", it does fall under supernatural thriller/horror. One of the main reasons for this one making it onto my list is the plot twist at the end. Without giving anything away, this one is absolutely worth a watch!
4) Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is one of those horror movies that you can watch over and over, and it's still just as good as the first time you watched. I stumbled upon this little treasure my freshman year of college while I was browsing Netflix. Guillermo del Toro did an absolutely BANGING job with this one. The plot is great, the monsters are just the right amount of creepy, and I loved that it didn't have a "happily ever after " ending. Not to mention that I slept with a light on for a week after watching.
5) Oculus (2013)
I've always seen mixed reviews on this one. Most people either loved it, or hated it. I fall into the first category. I love the way there's so many emotions between the siblings, the idea of a supernatural mirror, and the way the story progresses throughout the movie. I don't know if it would be feasible, but I'd love to see a sequel to this one.
6) It Follows (2014)
It Follows did a great job of finding a new take on the horror movie "monster". The idea of a curse that's unknowingly passed on through sex is a terrifying thought in itself. Now, add the fact that the curse follows you until you pass it on to someone else, and you've got a great movie. I love that there's always the chance it could come back to you too.
7) The Evil Dead (1981)
I'll admit, it took my way longer to watch this one than it should of. My hubby is a big fan and convinced me to give it a go. I'm so glad that he did, because this one was just an absolute joy to watch! I love the low budget feel this had to it, along with the cheesy special effects. Bruce Campbell does an awesome job with the character of Ash, not only in this movie, but the other two as well.
8) The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
The Cabin in the Woods had a lot of different aspects that were enjoyable to me. I loved the idea of the main crew deciding what monsters would come after them based on what objects in the cellar they chose. It was also pretty cool to see some subtle nods to Evil Dead scattered throughout as well.
9) They Nest (2000)
They Nest was a TV movie that came out on my 8th birthday. Growing up, I always watched a lot of horror movies with my mom, which I think is where my ultimate love of the genre stemmed from. I've always been terrified of bugs, and this movie didn't help that fear. There's a particular scene in this movie that's stuck with my almost 20 years later. While not as "scary" as it originally was to me, I still love it for the nostalgic value it has to me.
10) Jaws (1975)
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the reason I refuse to go into any large body of water passed my ankles. Movies that take place in the sea are always really cool because they play on the fact that there's so much about the ocean that we as humans don't know. The idea that there could be this massive shark lurking that we are totally unaware of until it attacks is something that is a very realistic fear any time we go to the beach. That uneasy feeling is something that sticks with you during the entire movie.
11) Child's Play (1988)
Now, let us be clear here guys. This movie made my list solely because it scared the ever loving SHIT out of me when I was younger. My mother had left me home alone and I made the unfortunate mistake of watching this. I was terrified of dolls for years after. I hid every baby doll I had in my closet, and refused to spend the night at my grandmother's because she had a large collection or porcelain dolls. I can remember going to the mall with my parents and my mom taking me into Spencer's gifts where she popped out of the corner with a Chucky doll. I ran out of the store and it took my dad a while to find me. It's been years since I've seen this movie, and it still gives me an uneasy feeling.
12) The Babadook (2014)
Psychological horror flicks are some of my favorites. I love when a movie can play on human emotions and have layers to it. This movie didn't need a stereotypical monster to make you feel uneasy. Some people were disappointed in the fact that you didn't see a lot of the monster, but that didn't take away from this movie for me. I appreciate it for what it was, a grieving mother who is trying to come to terms with what her life is now.
13) Evil Bong (2006)
Forgive me, but guys...this movie was great! Back in my days of smoking, I used to binge watch these movies like no tomorrow! It's technically a horror/comedy, but totally worth a watch. I love the idea of a sentient evil bong that traps the people who smoke out of it. While not scary, the movie is absolutely entertaining!
