I absolutely love the city of New Orleans. Love it! I just got back from doing a show there for the second time, and it couldn't have been better. If you've never been there, put it on your list of shit to do. Seriously. If you go to New Orleans and lick the sidewalk, it tastes like happy. Ok, probably not, but I hear it's artificialy happy flavored. Tourists all make the mistake of going to Bourbon St. They do this because they are tourists, and don't know any better. If you go, avoid Bourbon St. all together. There are 3 other streets that are much better. Decatur st. (probably spelled that wrong) Frenchman st have a ton of awesome bars and resaurants and lots of people who are all cool as hell and friendly as can be. However, a bit off the path, on St. Claude is a bar called The Hi-Ho Lounge. This place is frigging awesome! A cool rock-a-billy type joint with live music and the occasional burlesque show (Reverand Spooky Le Strange and her Billion Dollar Baby Dolls... they rule!) The place is run by a guy and gal named John & Lori and they are the coolest people on Earth. They give us the full rock star treatment every time we roll through town. As if that wasn't enough, they have a 7 foot tall cage to dance in. What more could you ask for???
Back to Decatur st, here's a few other places to check out. Wicked Orleans has the best damn bowling shirts on Earth... period! They also have a bunch of other cool clothes, belts, hats, shoes and other what have-you's there. Just down the street is a coffee shop called Envie. Damn good coffee AND food. I ate like a king. There's a girl named Blaze that works there who is awesome.
Down on Frenchman, there's a bar/resaurnt called "13". A nice low key place to get a bite to eat or a drink and unwind. A little down the block on the other side of the street is a place called SNOG or something like that. There's a girl named Gabby that works there who is absolutely adorable. Give her some red wine and spend the rest of the night laughing until your cheecks hurt. She's awesome!
Last, but certainly not least is our friend who lives there. Not only does he let us stay with him for free, but he books shows for us and does a top notch job of promoting them. He got 150 people to come out and see us when we had never done a show anywhere near that town. God Bless him! His name is Johnny Woodstock. Pretty much everyone in the city knows who he is. Stop anyone and ask for him.
In closing, if I didn't have so much going on with my comedy and radio shows up here in Philly, my bags would already be packed. One day I'll move down there. All Hurricane Katrina did was give the city a bath. The awesome-ness of it is still alive and well.
