In celebration of our our anniversary, we had dinner at Daniel. We didn't know anything about it, other than:

A. It's a "nice" restaurant.
B. They have a decent vegetarian selection (which I've found to be very rare for a nice restaurant).

This place was like a "Expensive French Restaurant" scene in a movie, with perfect postured French waiters, a two-volume hardback wine list (most pages included a $1000 bottle of wine), and a clientele of rich old white men. I was the only guy not in a suit (I wore a turtleneck & velvet jacket and — I shudder to recall — cargo pants).

We had a bottle of Joel Gott 2001 Cabernet and each ordered off of the vegetarian Prix Fixe. The food alternated between very good (Winter Squash Casserole with Brussels Sprouts, Sage and a Mustard Endive Salad) and excellent (Fricassee of Chanterelles, Spinach, California Carrots & Salsify). The waiters were so attentive that when we tried to sneakily switch our plates so that we could each try the other's food, one appeared out of nowhere to exchange them for us.

The desserts (both chocolate; mine a souffle and hers a fondant) were, I'm afraid, only good. But they provided us with an extra dessert in honor of our celebration (with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate sauce), which was in addition to the basket of freshly baked Madeleines and the platter of tiny assorted sweets that came with the bill. We left stuffed, and almost $300 lighter.

In the elevator back up to our apartment, we ran into a doctor Leah knows. He asked us if we were getting back from dinner, and then where we ate. His response couldn't have been more satisfying:
"Daniel? Good Daniel? Expensive Daniel? Three-weeks-reservation-in-advance Daniel?"
We declined to mention that the reservation had been made that very day.

I think I finally have a good answer as to where I should go to lunch.

Holy shit - I wasn't being serious when I said you guys should go to Daniel! It's supposed to be amazing, but it's SO EXPENSIVE. Dear god. You should have told me you were going - one of my friends from high school works in the kitchen there and has promised to hook up whoever I send with extra stuff. Oh well, glad to hear that you had a good dinner and anniversary, anyway.

I think that woulda been fine. ???? biggrin What?

Straight boys that wear velvet are hawt! (I'd probably turn my head at half the gay guys wearing velvet as well) I went out the other night with my American gal pals and one of their Internet friends showed up wearing a velvet shirt. We couldn't stop touching his arms. He was such a perfect gentleman. I was surprised they met the guy on yahoo. Very nice boy. biggrin His shirt was my favorite color too. Eggplant. Whoot.
