I just finished reading You Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers, former editor of the totally excellent MIGHT Magazine, and author of bestseller A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I didn't like AHWoSG so much; it was just so so so very very self-conscious. In a clever way, but still. This newer book is fiction.
It's about three close friends: Jack, Hand, and Will(the narrator). Jack dies in a car accident. Will gets a windfall of $80,000 and convinces Hand to join him on a week-long trip around the world at which time they give away as much money as they can. An excerpt:
"What are you wearing?"
"What?"
He was wearing a shirt declaring I AM PROUD OF MY BLACK HERITAGE. On a blond man with swishy pants it looked all wrong.
"Where'd you get that?"
"Thrift store."
"No one's going to get the joke here. Or whatever it is. It's not even a joke."
"No one will know. And it's not a joke. I liked the shirt. Did you see the back?"
I nodded slowly, to communicate the pain it caused me. The back said ROGERS PARK WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL.
I want that shirt.
Oh, and I saw a very good film last night: Deathtrap. If you like extremely clever and funny thrillers, you'll enjoy it.
Speaking of the 80s: if you like lightcycles, you'll probably enjoy Armagetron.
