Epic Epic Night!
Went to the Otep show.
Kicked off around 5 with a VIP poetry reading and sound check
which was amazing. She also spoke with the handful of us about politics and the importance of voting and civic responsibility- especially for a young woman who said she doesn't vote because she doesn't feel politics are important, and Otep put in into perspective with how hard women had to fight to be able to vote in the first place in this country, and how much legislation against women's rights are on the table in the coming elections. It was cool to see someone people connect with reaching out like that.
After that a few bands played Saalythic a local black metal band played, they were solid, then Element a440 who blew me away from both a visual and a sound standpoint. Reminded me of Lestat's band from Queen of the Damned if Edsel Dope or Wednesday 13 were the singer, absolutely awesome. Howitzer was next and they lived up to the promise of their name- wicked sonic assault with the 3 members of the band all sharing equal vocal duties.
One Eyed Doll played after that, and if you ever get the chance to see them live- do it. Kimberly Freeman's onstage persona and antics are absolutely brilliant and the woman can work a crowd. Junior's drumming keeps things moving as she bends backward in a way I've only ever seen Iggy Pop pull off well, and she's playing the guitar while doing it. To really explain their set is impossible, you really have to check them out. Youtube them if nothing else.
Butcher Babies were next, and I wish I could've gotten a better picture of them- but they never stood still! This band is the real deal- I know the fact that the frontwomen are gorgeous and wear nipple tape gets a lot of the focus, but to just acknowledge their anatomical attributes would be criminal as this band put on a show, was musically vicious, and just killed it.
And then it was time for Otep
Her guitarist who is a friggin stud dressed as Bane from Batman- the man shreads. Period.
And Otep herself. I've seen her live a few times, but only at big festivals. The thing I noticed most is despite the tone and nature of her songs- there is an undeniable joy on her face when she's on stage. That was the thing that struck me most- she looked absolutely thrilled to be there in front of us. And after ending their set with a cover of Nirvana's Breed, for which a good portion of the crowd broke the "no moshing" rule, I was able to get to meet Otep and snap a quick picture.
She's amazing and I'm so glad I got to talk to her, albeit briefly, both at the poetry reading, and after the show, and let her know how much she is an inspiration.
It was a solid ending to a long week, and now I'm exhausted and in need of sleep. Goodnight SG land.
