There's a reason why I traded the reprint rights to my digi-novel for a free SG membership, and it's far less sinister than a fiddle of gold for my soul. My first book, "Please Use Rear Exit", began rolling out, chapter-by-chapter, in March, and will now get a similar treatment from SG's newish blog. So what do I get out of this, other than a renewed interest to get more tattoos? And why is SG serializing an online science fiction novel set on a bunch of buses inside The Internet?
Part of SG's mystique and continued success--ranked right behind reconsexualizing the world wide web--is the site's pride in purveying alternative DIY culture. People come for the sex (no pun intended), but stay for the discussion on music, books, film and, ahem, tattoos...especially those created outside of the "system." As I couch-surf my way through LA, releasing chapters of "Please Use Rear Exit" that I wrote, designed, curated and posted to The Internet (almost single-handedly), SG's awesome arts editor Nicole Powers seems to think that fits the outside-the-box mold.
The book centers around Mikhail, who has recently broken up with a girlfriend of 18 months and ventures into a bizarrely familiar universe to celebrate single life with his friends. Club and bar-hopping around this bus-stricken city, Mikhail encounters an invisible girl, a talking growth, an angry Robert Horry and, eventually, more chaos than he can handle. Like the Internet that birthed this universe, "Please Use Rear Exit" is full of sex, free music, multimedia FAILs, and all that is open or naked about humanity's quest to upload/Tweet their dearest desires.
If you've made it this far, then maybe you'll want to see my shiny contributor's page or Tweet at me...And be on the lookout for new original music being released through the wormhole into Please Use Rear Exit's dimension.
