I was reading the "what's the most disturbing movie you've ever watched" thread, and I was tempted to comment but I don't feel like being called "judgemental", "candy-ass", "weak" or whatever. So I'll just vent here.

What I found fascinating was that most of the replies ran along these lines:

"Oh my god, that movie was so sick! So disgusting! Vile, reprehensible, horrible! I couldn't watch it all the way through! I couldn't sleep afterwards! I couldn't get it out of my mind! It was hideous! I felt like puke afterwards! It was the most horrible experience of my life!

I LOVED IT!"

shocked confused

Uh. If you find something vile, hideous and disgusting, then wouldn't your first response be to avoid it at all costs? Why in the hell would you love it? Is that not a contradiction in terms? Would you not want anything at all to do with it and stay as far away from it as you could?

Granted, there are some films that are "lovingly" vile, hideous and disgusting, like John Waters films. They're so over-the-top and made with such affection for their subjects that you gotta love 'em. But a piece of crap with "no redeeming social value" that just makes you want to vomit? Why would you love that?

Yes, I understand our fascination with gross things. A squeamish little peek used to satisfy us. But haven't we gotten a little carried away by it all? Why are we so in love with things that make us sick? Why are we so fascinated by violent death, blood, guts and destruction? Isn't that kind of a waste of our time on earth?

I'm just so damn tired of destruction. Is it too much to ask for a little creation once in a while? blackeyed

PS: What's the most disturbing movie I've ever seen? Gummo, hands down. And I did NOT love it. I hated every minute of it. Why I sat through the whole thing, I do not know. But I hated it. Harmony Korine should be locked up and the key thrown away. I'm not kidding either. skull

catdad:
I think you'll enjoy it. I had the "old clothes" the first time, but they subbed the picadillo (my preference) for the shredded. They don't allow subs anymore. But it was one of the best dishes I've EVER had. I do want to try it again with the shredded beef. This time I had the pepper pot stew. Not nearly as good, but very tasty compared to common fare. The empanadas (calzonish things) are very good. Here's the citysearch profile if you haven't seen it.

We recently ate at Clarklewis. I recommend it as well. Or Oba, Fife, 3 Doors Down, Bugatti's in West Linn, Lauro Kitchen, Amadeus, Castagna, Wildwood, Pazzo, or Mint. Those have all been very good to exceptional. I think we're going to go to Acadia for my birthday this year. yum...
