so the foodshow was actually right good times...
..met wai and manny at the ungodly hour of 9:15 after getting 2 large lattes..since apparently asking them to fill up one large latte cup with espresso only is something they wont do... bah (yes i know espresso has the least amount of caffeine of any coffee..but i like the taste best)
..got stuck in a bit of traffic..no surprise..but all in all not too bad of a drive.. saw chef rob...he told me i was never getting my money for the chemicals i bought for him..asshat... funny guy tho and he did hook me up with some before..i never even asked for any money..
got in..man..saw the professional level plates.. some where really really nice..was REALLY shocked to see a vegan plate..kudos to them..tho they got totally reamed out by the judges on it..not because it was vegan..just because it sucked in various ways..
..fairly confident i could have competed this year..seems the non profession stuff (ie: not a ccc chef or anything) was pretty weak..even the professional level was.. chef entered us in it for next year..we should pretty much sweep it if the competition doesnt pick up drastically...we are good..not going to be modest here.. but that combined with the fact our chef and the one teaching us trained in this stuff for 30 ..THIRTY..years in germany and has countless gold medals from these competitions...well...its almost unfair
after seeing the plates..and around 10:30 or so wai told us we were heading for the beer vendors.. the girl doesnt even drink! ...better still..she was the one whos driving.. we wandered around chit chatting with vendors.. had some crappy pizza.. some real good sake and teas..man was the tea guy stereotypical... some surprisingly good bottled indian sauces.. a lot of crap..and i mean crap tho.. things supposed to make a cooks life easier..which apparently also means tasteless...
i ate some kangaroo..im a great vegetarian.. i had to know what it tasted like..im sure ive had it before..but so long ago i wasnt sure of it..now i am...
..we had a lot of sake..and that japanese vodka that all of a sudden is nameless to me..sojo? sojou? made freinds with some french chick who was selling fruit purees by mixing them into gin or rum.. i swear it looked like we were just hanging out a the bar at that table..im taking full credit for finding that booth
..we drank a loooot of free beers tho... for the record..raspberry wheat beer tastes like bad cough medicine and should be avoided at all costs.. all wheat beer still tastes like compost.. coffee beer is surprisingly great and a nice pick me up.. steelhead dark has a crazy good chocolate aftertaste to it.. and nobody should have a guiness tap unless they are serving the stuff..
..at one point we were getting some more beers.. and they guy asks how many people work at seven windos (you had to wear tags to get in).. so randy and i look at each other a second..and say..well theres 5 of us here.. to this the guy says hes seen at least 17 seven windows tags at the booth.. knowing it was just the 2 of us going there over and over.. we had a good laugh at that one..
some guy from sosa was there trying to sell his amazingly pre-mixed and over priced chemicals..we tried to find out where he got/how much it costs for the little plastic dealy that lets you make ~20 or so caviar at once instead of me sitting there with a syringe for 45 minutes...
..guy just kept trying to sound all high and mighty like he was the only person in the world who could do the stuff.. randy ended up cutting him off saying yeah yeah this guy does it all the time at our place and more stuff we just want to know how much one of these costs..
..he looked put in his place..then got all quiet saying he was doing a demo tomorrow..like..thanks?
saw an old boss there..had to avoid her like the plague..did not want to talk to her..was having a good time..didnt need to bring that down
watched the black box..it was...okay.. kinda dull..kevin bauche was a pretty funny host tho when unsensored.. mario.. or massimo capra..whatever you want to call him was a judge.. micheal smith and bob blumer were around too..but not part of this..lame-os..
anyway gio one..gio is hot as hell and has 5 restaurants and is 28... i want some gio.. tho i think the other guy did better than she did honestly..but not like it really matters..our chef wanted to go in.. he asked if he could do the black box next year.. wouldnt be surprised if they let him..everyone there knew him ffs.. like EVERYone.. chefs..vendors..competitors.. everybody..
.. once that was over we went up to college instead of braving rush hour gridlock on the gardner and spent something like 3 hours at all you can eat sushi.. back at sushi island.. was pretty much all that was open on a monday.. was pretty decent tho even if i did eat far far far far too much
im fairly certain something else occurred recently but i cant remember what it is... i know i may only be in 4 days again this week..which is so lame.. as i sort of like having money to go out and do stuff.. not that i really have anything to do..but still... finally feeling this recession now that people arnt eating out as much... my mommy is coming in to eat tomorrow apparently with some date..im spitting in his food if i dont like him ..HA!
