The California International Marathon was yesterday. It was my 5th one in a row and it was the coldest one so far for me. It was 27 degrees and ice everywhere at the start. There was a 15 mph wind and the temps never got above 44. That is cold, also we had cloud cover most of the day with the sun peaking out every now and then.
I ran strong and felt fantastic up until mile 20.I reached mile 20 in 4 hours. I was up to par with my fuel(taking in 1 GU gel every 50 mins---yuck) and water but after mile 22 I was just done.I was so cold, hungrey and started to get sore. The cold really had taken its toll on me.I just could not get warm.My core stayed cold. I ended up run/walking the last 4.5 miles but rocked the last 1.25 miles.I had a finish at 5 hr & 20 mins. Not my fastes BUT one of my favorites.
I realized I am a much stronger runner then I give myself credit for, I am a smarter runner now and I can push through this all.
You would think being a ultramarathoner that I would know all of this but I didnt.
I finished with my hubby andfamily and thousands of others cheering me on.
I got a 5 time finisher award along with my medal.
Here are a few pics
the last 100 meters or so until the finish.
