CIVIC DUTY POST (No, I didn't get a subpoena for jury duty )
This weekend, I'm volunteering to work with a local BSA troop. They're building a new 25-foot footbridge across a 15-foot overflow basin that's about half a mile in on the trail. The BSA troop have an agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers (who own that land) which allows them to make ACE owned land near the Etowah river in Canton a publicly accessible riverside hiking trail. If I'm not mistaken, I think the BSA troop leader has been working on and maintaining the trail for over 15 years. He also has plans to take it from Boling Park, the beginning of the trail, to the Georgia National Cemetery, which is several miles away. That may have already been completed - not sure. Regardless, the work is hard, but I enjoy getting out into the woods. The real fun starts when we complete the new bridge. The old bridge has to be disassembled and carried back out of the trail. Fun. Times. After getting there at 10:00 this morning, in two hours time, I was soaked through. Soaking-wet-from-sweat denim pants, work shirt, and logging boots is just as fun as it sounds, if you're into the sort of things that are the exact opposite of fun, comfortable, or dry. I guess every man makes his sacrifices.
More fun tomorrow!
