So, here's some jams from the 80's for the masses! Enjoy this playlist won't you? I'm somewhat of an 80's music lover but, today I'll throw a playlist together for everyone to dance to! I was a very little kid in the 80's, a teenager in the 90's and so on and so forth. Let's get this going shall we? Let's go!
Up first Tears For Fears with their iconic smash hit "Head Over Heels" off 1985's Songs From The Big Chair. Tears For Fears is deceptive in their craft and people cannot deny the complexity hidden behind the supposed simplistic grooves of the duo. The bassline is EVERYTHING in this song! Believe me when I say that bassline is one for the ages. A truly standalone track overall too! Here it is!
Up next, "The Killing Moon" by Echo & The Bunnymen off their 1984 album Ocean Rain! Another phenomenal track from another goated band from the 80's. This track is very special to me and that's all I am willing to say on that topic. Anyway, here's the track!
Up next, the highly praised band Talking Heads. Off their 1980 album Remain In Light, I give you "Once In A Lifetime" and I can't stress enough how important this song is to me. It's iconic in all the best ways possible and they quartet shows off their talents collectively on this track in spades. David Byrne for the win though! Always and forever! Enjoy!
Next up, a song that destroys me every time I hear it in the best ways possible. The track, off 1988's album Peepshow is, "Last Beat Of My Heart" by Siouxie And The Banshees. It's an indulgence I'll never abandon. I'll die on the hill that this is one of the most powerful and beautiful songs of the 80's. It's not even a contest really. This song is EVERYTHING to me. It's pure sadness and bliss all in one. Loved and forever a staple in my music rotation, forever.
Next, we have The Pixies! From their killer 1989 album Doolittle, the always fantastic track that is "Here Comes Your Man" and it's another staple of my playlists when I'm rocking out. The Pixies always amaze me and this track, while very familiar is always a treat in my eyes! A welcomed old friend if you will that shows up and makes you remember just how you feel about them every damned time. Enjoy! It's a favorite of mine to be sure!
Up next, a wonderous track from a great band, The Sisters of Mercy! Their amazing track "Lucretia My Reflection" off of the 1987 album Floodland Collection. This one and this band, hold a special place in my heart too! One of the progenitors of my "music can be dark and edgy" days and it's a phenomenal track!! Enjoy!
Next, we have one of the gods of modern rock. That person, is the one, the only, David Bowie. From his 1980 album Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), I give you the track "Ashes To Ashes" and I personally identify with this song on so many levels beyond even just the perils of what Bowie is singing about. His ideas, his music and his personality are so well known that he's an icon everywhere around the world and for good reason. The man was/is a god. Let it be known, David Bowie will always be popular amongst music lovers the world over!
Up next, the great band from Athens, Georgia! The B-52's! Off their 1980 album Wild Planet, "Give Me Back My Man" and I LOVE this song! Always have! The B-52's have always been unique, amazing and just all around phenomenal in every way possible! The absurdity of the band is part of the charm however, they are so much more than kitschy and absurd. Truly talented individuals and Cindy Wilson is destructively cool on this track! Enjoy! A few more coming after this one.
Up next, a supposed "one hit wonder" artist, Eddy Grant! Now, I could play songs that are less recognizable to others but I'll do the one everyone knows but, I encourage you to look further into Eddy's music. The man is a beast and so amazing in his own right. Eddy Grant's 1982 hit "Electric Avenue" off the album Killer On The Rampage. Enjoy. This song, however many times I hear it, slaps. A true classic for a reason!
Up next, Larry and the guys that are Cameo! From their superb 1986 album Word Up! I give you "Candy" and it is a fantastic song! Everything Cameo did is amazing honestly! They've been a favorite band of mine for a long time. Enjoy and enjoy Larry Blackmon's codpiece too lol! "Candy" has a great bassline and the keys are amazing!
Next up, we have the always great band that is Living Colour!! From their debut and fantastic album Vivid from 1988, I give you the hit track "Cult Of Personality" and it has always been a banger! From Corey's vocals to Vernon Reid's guitars, a phenomenal track! Vernon Reid is one of the absolute GOATs of the guitar world! Enjoy! They're one of my favorite older bands ever!
We're going to continue this streak of 80's hits for two more songs. The first of which comes from the reggae bad asses that went into 80's hardcore music in NYC. That band? None other than Bad Brains! Off their 1989 album Quickness, I give you "Soul Craft" and yes, the video clip is from 1990 but the album was released in '89 so it counts! Enjoy! One more artist and track after this.
Last but not least by any metric, I give you the 1980's god himself, the one, the only, Prince! I fucking love Prince. I always will. That's why I saved this banger for last. He's a true god of music as well and I miss this man every day of my life! I play his music on a near constant basis. Very rarely are there days when I'm not bumping entire Prince albums either on my sound system or my phone while I take breaks from recording myself. He is everything a music should strive to be musically speaking and he remains at the top of the mountain for 80's musicians and beyond. Like Bowie, he's an iconic artist that will never be forgotten and always celebrated! The man had so many hits it's hard to narrow this down but I have a long play winner here. That track is off the 1981 album and track of the same name, "Controversy" and I hope you enjoy this pick!! He's forever the one artist I'd take a time machine back to see in the 80's before my time and I saw him in the 90's a few times! The man is the GOAT in my humble opinion. A multi instrumentalist, force of nature. A lyric writing monster of epic proportions! Enjoy!
