I've just finished reading Ritualistic Human Sacrifice by CV Hunt. Holy. Shit.
The story follows a douchebag named Nick Graves and the incredibly fucked up predicament he finds himself in. When he decides to tell his wife that he wants a divorce, she steals his thunder by saying she's pregnant. He never wanted kids and this revelation makes him resent her even more. They fight, make a deal, and then, readers, there's a whole lot of revenge. He buys a house far away from everything and everyone, in a town that is really kind of weird. Soon things start to fall apart and fast. Weird stuff starts happening in his home, his wife has a miscarriage and the medicine the town's only doctor gave her makes her act in ways that causes the couple to drift even further apart. And how everything unravels toward the end? Not for the faint of heart, that's for sure.
Have I mentioned that this is a horror erotica?
The story is creepy and super fucked up. Every chapter leaves you feeling as though you need to take a shower, but instead, you keep flipping pages because you want to know what happens next. It's a quick read, and there are areas that I wish were expanded on. The horned shadow figure, for one. It makes a couple of very brief appearances, and at one point, it may have been heard in the house? I was hoping that it would make a huge appearance at the end -- sort of like a final boss that needed to be fought in order to escape. But that doesn't happen. In fact, the ending could've had more fight. Nick's wife could've stabbed him and said, "how's this for life-altering choice?" and leave him to bleed out on the inverted cross. Or, she could've realized that she still loved him, despite him being a piece of shit, kill his captor and initiate a massive brawl to the death in the church. Considering all the gore and violence in this book, I was actually surprised that no one dies . . . oh, wait. Hahaha. Nevermind.
This book has a lot of elements that tickle my fancy: violence, awkward situations, demonic worship, a powerful matriarchy, and so much unsexy sex. Ritualistic Human Sacrifice is at times uncomfortable, but compelling as hell. CV Hunt is the Todd Solondz of horror.
