Paul van Dyk spun a four hour set at Nation in Washington, DC, starting at 12:00 in the morning today. What a fucking blast. The set was an outstanding blend of electronica styles that never once broke the groove. If it weren't for the occassional breaks to chug Gatorade or Jolt, I would have been in a solid trance the entire time. I loved every damn track he played and the sequence in which he played them. When this guy spins, you get the sense that he's really into what he's putting on and not just pressing play and assuming we'll like it. Bravo, van Dyk. Can't wait to catch your work live again sometime.
The crowd was also a blast. Tons of light shows from some really good spinners put on some good moves all morning helped make it a great experience. One of them, my close friend Mark, was a hit with his glow stick nunchucks. A noteworthly highlight was a spinner with a set of orange sticks on what appeared to be five foot cords. (Wow.) His show was impressive enough as it was, then a couple others mixed in with blue and green. Good stuff. I only wish I had drugs on hand.
Sadly, it seemed to come to and end far too quickly. But it ended on a high note. As things were getting wrapped up, I managed to get caught up in the surge to the DJ booth where I got my VIP pass signed. Perfect end to a great night.
Unfortunately, the pictures from my POS cell phone camera didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I got some good videos, but then I cannot upload them here. At least some of the pictures I got a good impression of the scene.
If you've never heard van Dyk live and like eletronica, I highly recommend going to whatever lengths you can to get a spot at one of his shows. You will find its worth every penny. Too bad we can't say that about more DJs in this arena.
