I've been looking into updating my wardrobe, to get ready for my big professoring days this fall. While I have some jackets and nice shirts, the majority of my wardrobe now revolves around t-shirts. Plus, a lot of my button downs no longer fit - many of them are just too damn big. So I need to up the ante, so I look respectable.
But therein lies the rub: professional clothes are expensive. Like, really *quite* expensive. This kinda bums me out. I mean, I didn't think sports jackets and button down shirts were cheap ... but I figured I could drop a few hundred bucks, and get a decent wardrobe. Instead, I think I could drop that cash and get like two outfits.
I could go cheaper, I know, but I'd like to get some quality stuff that will last - just like they tell me What Not To Wear. This is clearly going to be more time consuming than previously thought.

Can't you just invest in a coat with patches on the elbows and be done with it?
