Yeah, I already posted this on my MySpace page, but I feel strongly about it.

The Republicans Are Coming
No doubt Paul Wellstone is rolling in his grave.
With few exceptions, Minnesota has voted for a Democratic presidential candidate for a very long time. The last exception was 1976; even so, that means we've consistently voted Democrat longer than any other state. We even voted for Mondale in 1984_the only state to do so.
Now we're viewed as a swing state. A state the Republicans think they have a chance at winning.
As a result, the Twin Cities will be hosting the 2008 Republican National Convention. It's a disgrace. The Democrats were also looking at holding their convention here, but they were too slow on making the deal.
So we're stuck with Rebuplicans. They'll need 17,000 hotels rooms (kept at above 68 degrees Fahrenheit), and we'll need 250 to 300 more buses daily.
I wonder if anyone has estimated how many more prostitutes we'll need? And our visitors are really going to stress the illegal drug infrastructure; drug-dealers, remember that Republicans prefer prescription pain killers, so stock up on Vicodin, Percocet, and Oxycontin, but make sure to get some blow for Our Glorious Monkey Leader.
I don't mind that we're hosting the convention, as long as two things happen. One, they had better spend a lot of money. Two, they all go home when it's over. Outsider moving to the state is probably one of the leading reasons we're now a swing state.
We don't want your kind here.
____
I actually have a Republican friend; she suspected my last sentence meant I didn't want her here. That's not the case; she was born in Minnesota, so I'll forgive her politics.
My concern is with people who come from elsewhere, who have no idea of traditional Minnesota values such as Populism, the Jante Law, conservationism, and other things strongly influenced by our mostly German and Scandinavian ancestors. They don't understand that we can be rather liberal, but still go hunting, and other seeming paradoxes. It's not a problem with foreign immigrants. It only seems to be a problem with Republicans from elsewhere.
They don't assimilate. Instead they come here and expect us to change for them.
But it's too early; I can't put together a well-formed argument at the moment.
