I received a thin letter from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign today. Speaking from experience, one does not generally want to get thin letters from universities to which one has applied.
This, however, was simply a letter informing me that my application is complete, financial aid decisions will be made after March 1, and that if I have any questions about the Department of Mathematics or program that I should feel free to contact them.
So it wasn't a rejection letter. Yay! I've gained a short reprieve.
I may also take a road trip to Pennsylvania next weekend. It's too early to get my hopes up, as they will inevitably be crushed. But my hopes are up.

That used to be my favorite Bob Dylan song.
Hopes exist to be crushed. It builds character.
Either way, it does sound like a positive letter!
