had to take the baby cousin to see andrew lloyd weber's "starlight xpress" last night.
holy mother of god, that musical is BATSHIT. it's fucking insane! there are TRAINS. and they SING. and they're all in early eighties leotards with their rollerskates and they zoom around and sing.
THEY'RE TRAINS, PEOPLE.
and the starlight xpress itself is some kind of mystical god-train that our hero-train more or less prays to in the big musical number. and there's a RAP. yes. the freight trains (read: black trains) have a rap. ("what time is it? it's race time! what time is it? it's race time!") well, the young black trains have a rap (their characters are called the "hip-hoppers"), but the old black train sings the blues. who thinks this is acceptable??
but racism aside, the whole thing is like a bad trip. especially the song by the electric train ("ac/dc is ok with me, i can switch and change my frequency") there's laser lights, sparks shooting off rollerskates and even a THRILLING 3-D PORTION! i thought i was freaking out. i think i need to sit in my room with the curtains drawn for a while and have a little sanity-check.
here's a pic of the electric engine and his various cars.
