Yes, boys and girls: The Winter Olympics is fastly approaching again. And all of Norway is shivering with anticipation.
Let me just quickly tell you about Norwegian athletes. Norway hasn't got Jocks. It is a totally unknown consept over here. We do have cheerleaders, but you won't catch a Norwegian cheerleader cheering on boys. In Norway cheerleading is an independant sport in it's own right.
So, Norwegian athletes: They tend to be loners. Even the teamplayers. Our best footballers (that's soccerplayers to you Americans) usually come from a lonely island out in the open ocean.
And, as I mentioned before, a lot of them are goths. Norwegians are often Goths by default.
Well, as the Olympics are drawing near, I will in the following days have a countdown of the 20 greatest Norwegian sport achivements. This may sound like bragging - and it is. But the reason Norwegians are so proud of our athletes are that we are 4.5 million against 6 billion, so every time we win anything we are delerious.
So here goes:
20. Olaf Tufte - Olympic gold in rowing
Rowing is a typical Norwegian sport. One man alone against the rest. And with our very long coastline, the training conditions are ideal.
What: 21. August 2004 is a day that Olaf Tufte most likely will remember for the rest of his life. That was the day he showed the rest of the world what we make people from up here in the north. He parked the rest of the field, and rowed inn the first Norwegian gold medal that championship.
Where: Schinias Centre, Athens, Greece.
Why: Everybody who has run out of gas in the middle of a Norwegian fjord knows how heavy rowing is. And the way this iron man did it was a demonstration of power you just have to respect and admire.
