Had a good weekend, had to go up to a site and since it was near my parents I stayed with them. Great to see the family again.
Well today was certainly an interesting day.
I dont know why I did it but when the company asked for volunteers to become first aiders I stepped forward. It was actually quite good but damn trying to put someone in the recovery position is bloody hard work. CPR was entertaining because they had dummies with all these guages on them and there were comments like "okay you just pushed so hard on his chest you have broke all his ribs and probably killed him" heh heh. Its hard to believe though just how much force you should use and just how much the chest should be compressed doing this... I mean seriously you are talking about crushing someones chest by 1 1/2 - 2 inches And bloody hell is it some work... seriously I did four repetitions of two breaths + fifteen chest compressions and was out of breath. People that could do that for more than 10 minutes must be amazingly fit... although I suppose you just cannot say what you would be capable of if you knew someone would die if you did not keep it up while waiting for an ambulance. I am now a dab hand with CPR so if anyone wants the kiss of life give me a call I have to say I was impressed since it was only a one day course, the degree of knowledge I brought back from it is impressive. I just hope it will never have to be used though.
While I enjoyed the day there were a number of things that really frustrated and annoyed me. Do you know that now a first aider cannot do so many things because in the current law climate you can become responsible? For example say some old boy is having a heart attack, keeled over in pain and unable to reach his tablets. You are allowed to get his tablets out of his pocket and place them in front of him but you CANNOT give him the tablets.
This legal climate now of sue everyone must be costing lives, seriously its so screwed up its unreal. "Look sorry man I know you are in pain and dying but I can't get your tablets because you may sue me" wtf???
