Hey hey SGland!!
I am SUPER excited by this week's homework! @missy and @rambo proposed we talk about our favourite movie.
A while ago I used to say that it was impossible to have a favorite movie. There are just too many, too many genres, just too many to choose from and too many that I love for different reasons. But one day I got it all figured out. You can LOVE lots of movies, but the how to choose your fave movie ever? Well, it is simple. I guess that's the one you're always willing to watch over and over again. If someone says 'let's watch this movie' it won't matter how many times you've watched it, or if you just watched it last week, or in what mood you feel... You will say YES.
There are lots of movies I really really like, like Velvet Goldmine, The Hunger, Gone with the wind, Lost Highway, Zoolander, RHPS, Blade Runner, Wild at Heart, The Apartment, Lost boys, the Virgin Suicides, Fucking Amal, But I'm a cheerleader, Sunset Boulevard, Black Swan, Superstar ... But even though I love them a lot, they're not my favorite movie ever.
And what's my favorite movie? The one I never grow tired of... The Labyrinth.
Yes, that Jim Henson animatronic flick starring David Bowie (one of my all time heroes, duh) and young and adorable Jennifer Connelly. I simply ADORE this movie. Every bit of it. Yes, even the scene with the horrid chroma and the red creatures (can't remember the name right now) playing with their own heads as if it were soccer balls. I love how it mixes classic tales, I love the aesthetics, the excess of glitter, I even love David Bowie's leggins. C'mon, the Goblin King is the coolest! He even turns himself into an owl, he plays with crystal balls that show you your dreams! And also... how about his relationship with Sarah (Jenny Connelly's character)??? Isn't it sick but wonderful at the same time? I truly believe he's deeply in love with her. Just in a twisted way. But as he says, everything he does, he does for her. She imagined him as evil, then he's the evilest of them all. I dunno, my head is probably damaged by reading Lolita when I was 12 but I just find this part of the story too entrancing. Also the ball scene! My god, isn't it the most romantic, beautifully grotesque thing ever??? Her dress, all those people in the masks, the broken mirror...
It was so significant in my childhood. I was born in '84 and it was relised in '86. I remember how I used to watch it every year on the TV during Xmas Holidays. And since I was a long haired brunette with big blue-greenish eyes there would always be someone at school who, back from the Xmas break would say 'Hey I saw this Labyrinth movie and the girl in it looked like you". I can't even dream about matching Jennifer Connelly's timeless beauty, but still I felt very very proud.
And the music!!! Oh you guys, the music is sooo perfect. And not only in this scene (must say 'As the world falls down' must be one of my fave songs ever) but all the soundtrack. Undergroung, Magic Dance, Within You... I just can say: Thanks David Bowie for this.
I dunno, I just love it to pieces!!!
And you? What's your fave movie?
Love,
Sheer
