Ham with pineapple and cherries, mashed taters, mashed yams with marshmallows baked on top, cauliflower, rolls, various raw veggies and dip, gravy, and zucchini pie.
Last year we ran a pretty good garden in our back yard. The zucchini were huge (I'm going to encourage my mom to enter one in the state fair this year, because I saw last year's winners) and kept coming, so we kept picking and grinding/mashing them up and freezing it. But my mom has this zucchini pie recipe from her mom, and it tastes just like pumpkin pie, only lighter.
Speaking of the state fair, I have my tatting project that I need to start! I only have 4 months to get it done. I entered last year and scored 94/100 (not bad for a first try) but didn't place for ribbons, my thread selection being the major downfall (I chose a red-white-blue variegated thread for a doily and so it distracted from the pattern). This year I'm going to do a framed piece - a colonial lady, some grass, flowers, a sun, and maybe a cloud on black velvet.
And y'all are thinking, "what the hell is tatting?" It's a 200+ year old form of lacemaking that is done with lots of little knots, almost like macrame. This is a picture of the doily I entered in the fair last year.
See, my thread choice stank. But I didn't decide to enter that until last minute.
I also dye some of my own thread, though I haven't used anything I've dyed yet. I should fix that.
And if anyone's wondering how I came to tat, I saw a small article about it on the back page of the Variety section of the Strib (Minneapolis Star Tribune) some odd years back and thought it would be cool to teach myself. So I did.
