Friday night, I went to a party @ Mary Patton's. She does all the local music and in-store shows @ Amoeba records. She always encourages people to bring instruments for drunken sing-alongs.
Last week, I brought my guitar and was the only one. The party was pretty packed, so it didn't happen. I even got made fun of by a few obnoxious drunks, but I thought it was funny.
She had leftovers & decided to have another party. I didn't bring my guitar this time, but the sing along did happen. At first it was a couple gilrs that were doing pretty self-indulgent stuff. I just waited until they ran out of material rather than step on their toes. The guitar got passed around and no one could remember anything.
So, I grabbed it and started playing "Miracle Man' by Elvia Costello and then "Take Away This Ball & Chain". That livened up things a bit because before then, it was really subdued and nothing people could sing along with.
Another guy there, Foster, perked up and he played "Watching the Detectives" and then did a really impressive version of "Battered Old Bird".
He said he wanted to get together some time to play so I gave him my card. I could tell he'd done some street performing and I said so.
Then we played a bunch of Replacement songs. The guitar had no strap and there was no pick. I still have a blister on my finger from strumming. It was a good time. Foster was much more well versed than I and he took over for the next hour while I just drank with my friends.
I got home at 4am and then got up at 8 for a bike ride. I rode 23 miles with my friend, mainly along the LA river. We had to stop suddenly when we came along this Blue Heron.
I've seen them before, but only once. They are migratory and I've never seen one this close up. Usually, they are hanging out in the river. I've also seen a snowy egret. Anyway, we rolled up on the thing so fast I had to bring it to my friend's attention. Then we just sat there staring at each other until the Heron flew away. They are really impressive to see close up.
I came home, took a bath, made breakfast, and tried to go back to sleep but the neighbors light construction wouldn't let me. Carter came over to work on some transfers. We ordered Mexican from Las Ranas down the street. It's the only place I know of that delivers good Mex. Then, I fell asleep while Carter watched the USC/Oregon game.
I ended up going to home depot with a friend of mine. I got a plant for my new neighbors. They are a really cool younger couple. The landlord tried to tell them they couldn't have plants because he doesn't want them to ruin the floors with water. So, I bought them a plant, put a bow & a card on it, & left it on their front door.
Saturday, I just sat on the couch and watched Sin City. I have to buy a copy of that damn movie. I didn't even recognize O'Rourke at first.
Our FUCKING bass player blew off practice again yesterday. That's two weeks in a row. I'm starting to think about replacing him again.
I tidied up the house a bit yesterday and now it's time to go back to work. I'm about half way to getting the laptop for school. I just ordered more CDs for the band. It's the last batch I should have to order for some time.
I'm feeling that sense of restlessness and impatience I get right before I have a spurt of productivity. I need to contain it so I'm focused and there isn't any frustration that develops.
I'm so in love with my new guitar. I think my new motivation comes from playing guitar every night when I get home from work. Maybe I should just stop watching TV completely? Those nights that I don't feel like doing anything after work might be better spent just going to sleep. I need to get up earlier in the morning to take full advantage of my days. That'll give me more time for the gym & biking.
I feel a sort of urgency. Most of my friends are older and are on the itinerary. Marriage, house, kids. I'd like those things, but not until I'm ready and with the right person. I'm not out to find someone to fill in the empty space. I'm just living my life. Going back to school, holding down a job, looking for a new one.
I need to travel more. I would like a partner in crime.
