I have been thinking a lot about religion and God of late, with all that is going on across the nation; e.g. gay marriage debate, War on Women, the more than prominent part religion is playing in the Presidential election, the horrid death in Syria, the Jerry Sandusky trail etc. Every now and then I reexamine my decision to lay God down, stop believing, and become an Atheist! Recent events have reaffirmed my decision, so I decided to post the poem I wrote to mark my coming out.
I Put God Down Today
by
ShadowBard
I put God down today,
I laid him down and buried him;
may he rest in peace.
I put God down today,
I laid him down and buried him
in that special place in my mind
heretofore reserved for Santa Clause,
the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny
and imaginary friends.
I no longer believe because Im supposed to believe
in something untouchable and unrealized.
I need no explanation for what I am
and why Im here,
I just am
Faith is just a myth to explain the unknowable,
a tool to control the questing needy masses;
a blunt instrument of subjugation and oppression;
a collapse of reason and logical discourse;
a study in willful self-imposed ignorance,
and I no longer subscribe to it.
My mind is free,
oh what a breath of fresh guiltless air it breaths!
Oh, how sweet the taste of true freedom.
My soul is cleansed of sin,
but my moral compass still holds true.
I put God down today,
I laid him down and buried him;
may he rest in peace.
