So I ended up attending a haunted house on Friday the 13th (as I was hoping to, it just looked bleek by 10pm when no one called back) So I have been thinking about various Haunts about Town since, so here ya go.

This is a short overview from my perspective of the Denver area haunted houses.

First, the one I went to Yesterday: The 25th Hour. (Mississippi and Havana in the Buckingham Mall)

Haunted Houses are usually better if they have a theme, a specific goal, or at least SOME structure to them. This one was really short, but had a bit of structure. You're "trying to sell a house" but there is a coffin in the basement that people are terrified of, and you're supposed to go investigate. You're walking through various rooms, very dark, generally confusing, but interesting. They have various ways of messing with your head by moving the floor or the walls around you, and it was generally a lot of fun. The one downfall was it was relatively short.

Now The Asylum (120th and I-25 at Boondocks Fun Center)

This haunt was crap. Relatively short, really loud the entire way through (nothing to just scare you, just gives headaches) no structure to it, just random props around. Too many people in the house at once, so as you get close to something that MIGHT scare you, you already see it several feet away as its scaring the party in front of you. One upside to this haunted house was the maze at the end, though short, made things at least challenging.

Primitive Fear/Realm of Terror (5155 e 64th ave, Commerce City)

Another garbage haunted house, I don't think I remember really seeing anyone working inside at all (just banging on walls from the other side). The Flashing lights just gave me a headache and got us lost (so we bumped into the group behind us and doubled in size) some of the loud noises were well placed and made for a few good jumps, but otherwise a relatively weak waste of money.

Field of Corpses (64th and Ward Road in Arvada)

This has to be one of the better Haunts I've ever seen, you're escorted through an outdoor house full of various things to throw you off (including a lot of mist so you can't see where you're walking, or what on) People stand on boxes so if you're used to watching the floor to see if someone is there to scare you, you can really be caught off guard. The one escorting you through the house will whisper your name to the actors as you go through each area, making it a very personal Scare (They're coming to get you Barbara is what comes to mind) and they lock you in various rooms with things to scare people in different ways (one to attack fears of clowns, one to destroy people afraid of electricity, etc) and its put together very well. The one major downfall, the LINE! The line was sooooooo fuckin' long, I think we stood there for over an hour, but it was worth it.

The 13th Door (I-225 and Tamarac in Englewood)

Another well-done themed Haunt, this time you were trying to escape a hotel that had been burned by an angry gambler who had lost everything (or been caught cheating, can't remember) and you're taken through a series of rooms in the hotel with different degrees of burning and destruction, lots of very good actors shouting things like "HE'S COMING! GET ME OOOOUT!" and just making you feel like maybe you were in danger as well. There were a lot of decent scares, and then a relatively decent maze to top it off. Within the maze there were various dead ends that had people/things sitting on the floor eating fleshy bones, or just big scary guys with masks ready to freak you out when you bump into them.

On my wish list:

Fright mare (Westminster)
Curse of Slaughterhouse Gulch (Englewood)
Haunted Forest (Franktown)
Spider Mansion (Golden)
Haunted Mansion (Littleton)
Terror in the Corn (Erie) Unfortunately I work during the time the SC group will be there, so I have to find other means it seems.

If anyone is interested in attending haunted houses with a girl, let me know! Don't worry, I'm not an annoying screamer.

who said screaming is annoying? well maybe to the neighbors...but still....
