Tomorrow I head out to visit my parents. Again. For hopefully the last time this year. It's to be a quick trip.
I stumbled across an article about my hometown, Asheville NC. It described a number of wonderful things about the city, from its diversity (for a small southern burg) to its art scene. It painted a really wonderful picture of interesting nightlife, lots of local music venues, the joy that is Malaprops with its banned book section, the fresh food, the tolerance. And I thought Wow, what a great little burg I grew up in. Then I thought about it and realized that no, this isn't where I grew up. I saw glimpses of this town out of the grimy backseat window of my mom's oldsmobile, I passed by these stores on the way to church. But I didn't live there. I lived in a place that existed alongside this place, moved through it, feared it.
Anyway. All that to say Asheville looks like a nice town. But I really wouldn't know.

Time to revisit, reclaim. I have a deep-seated passion for my hometown. I can't even imagine not being in love with the blocks I strode as a child, the theaters I made out in in high school, the parks I misplayed fly balls in every summer. Maybe I owe more to my parents than I realized...
