Well, I've done the damn thing. While at the con this last weekend, an agent asked to see my book. The proposal is in the mail right now. mumble-something-humph.
There's a range of things that could come of this. The first and most obvious is Nothing. I could get yet another rejection in the form of my own cover letter stamped, in so many words, no. On the other end of the scale, everything could happen. He could read the proposal, love it, request the full ms., love it, get two or three houses bidding on it, they love it, it sells for more than it's worth, and I end up riding the Harry Potter craze to a paid-off mortgage and telling my boss to shove it.
What's more realistic, and honestly what I'm hoping for, is that this agent and I start a dialogue. We go over the book a few times, talk about the process, talk about what works and what doesn't. At that point he either offers representation or hedoesn't, and honestly it doesn't matter, because the next step is "Let's talk about your next book." And my next book is the one I actually like, that I feel I can make a career out of.
Anyway. In the meantime I have to get back to work.

Thumbs up. It's a great first step, wherever it leads.
