Today is totally my birthday. I got a videogame, a box of jellybeans, and a brushed steel Lamy Studio fountain pen. I'm excited. But here at work? No heat. I'm cold, and it's difficult to type.

I had no idea it had been so long since I updated. Man. Let's see, this week the battery on my wife's car ran so low that, not only did the remote not unlock the door, but the key would not open it either. That's right, folks, in the really nice cars even the manual lock is electronic. This means, if your battery completely dies,...

We're playing Candyland, we're cheating at Candyland, we're taking our shirts off. I'm not sure I follow the narrative structure.

Whatever. Yay pretties!

And for that, I am glad.smile

Well, I've done the damn thing. While at the con this last weekend, an agent asked to see my book. The proposal is in the mail right now. mumble-something-humph.

There's a range of things that could come of this. The first and most obvious is Nothing. I could get yet another rejection in the form of my own cover letter stamped, in so many words,...

Thumbs up. It's a great first step, wherever it leads.

Well, I've just returned from the World Fantasy Convention in Madison. I have to tell you, it was madness. I'm very tired. Every night involved wandering room parties, drinking free beer and talking to people in hallways. The nice thing is that it was almost entirely industry people. I mean, the only people there who weren't writers, editors or agents were spouses/s.o. to same. Nuts....

Okay! You have one year! Get crackin'!

And no. No, you may not pretend that the pancakes are cookies. However, I do have a ricotta cookie recipe. I've never tried it and can't say whether it's any good (and therefore won't post it -- only the recipes that turn out to be decent are worth passing along, IMO). Have you had the cookies before?
liante:
Oh. Okay. Well, I like cookies and pancakes, but it seems like a weird connection. Waffles vs. pancakes makes sense. Cookies vs. brownies makes sense. Cookies vs. pancakes, me no understandy. They do not serve the same food function!

This is how things happen, usually. I'm going on vacation. In order to go on vacation, I have to work my ass off the week before, because the people who are supposed to fill in for me can't really do that, so I have to try to get everything done that might need to be done while I'm gone. That's an impossible task, of course,...

So I'm having a decent day. A decent week. I'm a little freaked out to learn that, according a recent poll, 51 percent of americans don't believe in evolution. Now, I want to be absolutely clear on this. Fuck that. Fuck those people. Fuck those ignorant, empty air worshipping fuckheds. I tell my european friends that americans aren't honestly that stupid. Well, maybe I'm wrong....

Fuck.

Mostly to agree with you, but also because you just made me realize that I just posted my first f-word-free journal entry ever. Had to compensate.

Well color me jealous. tongue

I've never been to a fantasy, sci-fi, or gaming convention. Never. Not even a little one. I will go to Gen-Con someday if it kills me (and it might).

Re: pressing on fountain pens -- yeah yeah, I know. I was ten! What do you want!

I couldn't use them now anyway. I like being able to erase my mistakes too much.

Last night, to celebrate my recent story-selling-ness, I drank the aged wine. What kind of idiot gets drunk on a wednesday night? So now I am in precisely two incompatiable states. Hungover and At Work. Well, at least my job is of a non-technical, non-precision oriented, slack fest. Oh wait. It is exactly the opposite of that.

I am displeased with this.

Interzone bought my damn story. Damn it. Damn. Now I have to sit through a boring workday and act normal and not, you know, dance around and sing and laugh. But that's what I'm doing inside. Dancing and singing and laugh like an IDIOT!

Yay! Congrats. What kind of story was it?

Re: breaking the GPA -- not so much. Maybe if I were smarter and/or more inclined to work sensibly instead of bass-ackwards half the time. But yes, I'm certainly one of those drudgy good-little-Asian-kid nerd people. Breaking the system is something truly inconceivable in my world. wink

So, what is probably the final draft of the rewrite is complete. That took several passes, a little back and forth. It should probably be heading to the full editorial counsel sometime this week. Nerve-wracking.

I've learned that getting up early is better than staying up late. wink

Well, the first draft of the rewrite for IZ is done. That really took up a lot of my bandwidth. I'm just gonna coast for, oh, maybe 18 hours before my next project comes down. Ah, 18 hours of bliss, interrupted only by the constant grind of the day job, an unpleasantly deep-lung cough and other social obligations. Cheers!

Goodkind is amazing because he's bad in so many fucking ways at the same time. It's like the Triple Crown of Awfulness, and he's got a perfect sweep. It is, really, the one thing he can do well.

What is it that you like about science fiction?
liante:
Eee, I'm sorry. Thank you for bringing that to my attention; I would have lost your comment if you hadn't.

I loved Gibson's Neuromancer, and (most of) the short stories in Burning Chrome. After that, his work spiraled out beyond my ability to follow. But it's nice to find a fellow fan. wink

I agree with your assessment of sci-fi. I don't read it that much, but when I do it's usually near-future work; distant-future tends to be a little too speculative for my taste.

Very complicated days here. I've got a rewrite request from Interzone, and it's absorbing a disproportionate amount of my mental bandwidth. It's tough to retool your narrative apparatus and apply it to a story that you thought you'd finished. Anyway. It's going to be a good story, it's just not going to be the story I intended. It is, however, going to be a story...

Fixing the remote was huge! I almost got through a whole DVD last night. That never would have happened before the big battery replacement.

So... story? Interzone? Excited, yeah? When do we get to read it?
