i couldn't sleep at all last night, and really the whole week has been pretty restless. so i was supposed to go to the studio this morning but ended up at noon laying on the couch in the living room, the patio door open, a light, warm breeze rippling through from the heights of Twin Peaks, my cat pressed against my side, and my mind drifting in a sedate revelry.
unfortunately i had to work this evening, and the moment wasn't to last, but not before i got the most interesting phone call. this guy was engineering tracks for me and my partner for the past couple of months. but there was a falling out between him and my partner and he left with all the tracks, including one i had paid him to engineer. well, he calls me up today to get my full name so that he can credit me with production on it when he releases it. it will be my first production credit! on top of that, he's going to send me all the individual tracks so that i can remix it.
my most recent challenges seem to involve me being in the middle of two opposing forces, as a sort of mediator. i think it's because i can listen without taking a side. the ego is often in direct contrast with empathy, and overshadows the ability to view what the other person is seeing. i can't say that i enjoy being caught in the middle, though, mainly because i seem incapable of making either side understand.
the sweetest ending to any day is to find a box of new records freshly handed over by UPS. and this delivery is particularly delectable. some great deep tech house records. here's some of the more choice cuts:
Nalin & Kane: Talkin' About (Terry Lee Brown, Jr. remix) (Ultra)
The Wit: Witch EP (Freaks remixes) (Riviera)
Gene Ferris feat. Lady Sarah: Black Satin (Miguel Migs Dubpusher Rub) (Soma)
House music is not an intellectual sound, unless your spend most of your time in a studio and appreciate unique sounds and production. taken as a whole, house works in lower chakras, beginning in the heart and moving down into the sexual realms. it's meant to be felt in the moment, on a large sound system with lots of sweaty, delirious people around you, not to be pondered in headphones, scrutinized and deconstructed. House was like an ancient language to me, an incoherence of sound. But then I found that my body was the rosetta stone. house is a feeling, an emotion that can't be explained, it can only be savored.
