Do you believe in angels? I work with one. Her name is Angela. She's very quiet at work...and super sweet. I'd say hi to her in the halls. Chit chat randomly in the kitchen. I didn't know too much about her until a few days ago.
She moved to this city from across the country because of another girl she met on a fan website she ran. Angela wanted to take care of her friend, who suffered from a hereditary disease, Thalasemia. As a result, Angela was always bound by her friend's limitations, but she never let it get to her. She was always smiling.
Angela had gone so far as to move into her friend's hospital room during the day, and come to work at night. For the last 2 months, I hardly ever saw her. Then last Thursday she was in. Her friend had a surgery and was sleeping. Now she just needed to find a match for a liver transplant. Angela was so upbeat, and filled me in on the hurdles ahead, but how she knew her friend would pull through.
The next morning, Angela's friend passed away. She was 34. Angela didn't even get to say goodbye. She arrived at the hospital just a few minutes too late.
I feel so sad. I can't imagine how she feels.
Just another reminder not to take things for granted. And that because of people like Angela, I know there are truly angels out there amongst us.
