Geologists do the craziest things...like fly towards an erupting volcano, sneak into the danger zone, and take pictures of lava fountains.
Last Saturday I flew to Hawaii to fulfill a lifelong dream of watching a volcano erupt.
As you can see, I look pretty damned happy.
These photos don' even come close to doing justice for the majesty of the event. I was about 2 miles from the lava fountains, I could hear the lava sputtering and see the spatter flung several hundred feet into the air. I sat there all night (seriously) watching the show. It was absolute magic!
It was a short trip, only 4 days, but I will never forget what I saw. I fly home tonight, and I have zero regrets!!
