Where is the new underground? Who are the new punks?
In my continuing quest to make something meaningful of this life, whats struck me lately is my lack of passion towards any of the arts or cultural movements that have held my attention before. Whether it was punk rock, techno, comics, hacking, phreaking, underground film or gaming, some sort of live art has captured my interest since I was old enough to give the middle finger. Wheres that passion gone? I was starting to think it was just me getting old, but in moments of clarity unhindered by the events in my immediate life, I now believe that the problem is more outside of myself that I may have thought
Those interests are all in some way punk and underground movements and it seems like the last few years there has been a distinctive lack of the true punk mentality in any of these art forms. Punk isnt music you fuckers, punk is a howling, bleeding scream in the ear of a society that has passed out from too many cocktails. America is once again becoming petrified in its political, cultural, and economic shitpile and there just doesnt seem to be anyone taking a jackhammer to the dried stinking mess. What people generally consider the underground has been so institutionalized and commoditized that it has become completely irrelevant. Am I missing something? Is there a swell that Im completely unaware of? Show me something new. Show me a fucking light in this darkness you cocksuckers! Something like these guys. or this chick.
Afterthought: Maybe what brought me to this website, was that I thought I saw something punk rock about the place, the D.I.Y. creation, though this place has changed so much its not applicable any more, if it ever was. I may have been simply hypnotized by the titties.
Son of Afterthought: what do you think is the difference between the terms underground and punk? Theyre not synonymous but I think theyre close. Punk has to be an underground movement, though an underground movement need not be punk. Agreed?
