[ Now playing in Demon Tribe Hollow... Plague by Crystal Castles from (III) ]
Waters finally back on after five hours of nothing. Third time its happened in less than a month, which leaves me even more desperate than before to find out what the fuck is going on. Theres some kind of massive construction (as mentioned before) over on the next lighted cross-street from me, but its been there for the last half year with no discernable change having occurred. Hence, Im fairly certain at this point that CalTrans is simply working some kind of budget surplus off into thin air.
However, thereve been some emergency vehicles coming and going with some regularity, and I can almost always hear the monotonous, high-pitched bleeps from industrial trucks reversing in the background. So, I can only assume theres more going on of which Im aware. Conspiracy theories are coalescing with consistency.
As far as something less important than running water is concerned, Crystal Castles didnt always suck, did they? Alice Practice was a good EP, so maybe thats what the little cutesy duo of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath need to keep doing, because their latest full-length ((III)) doesnt warrant their livelihoods being supported by music. I heard it Monday and the thing is less inspired than Andy Warhols Empire. (For those who dont know, thats eight hours of a shot of the Empire State Building with a motionless camera.)
The only good track is Plague, which Im now convinced is a ruse to get people to think the rest of the album might be good, like a great trailer for a POS film.
Suffice to say, they need to get their skinny, hipster asses back in the studio and do this record over. Its as listlessly monochromatic as its cover and as unremarkable as most of the pedestrian song titles given to its shat-out twelve tracks. Add to this that Glass vocals are more unintelligible than ever (if that was even possible), caked with layers of reverb and sounding more distant and irrelevant than on any previous release.
There is, however, one more good thing about the albums lead single, Plague. That is, the entire video is footage from a French horror film by Andrzej uawski. I was unaware of this curious little picture before seeing the Plague video, and was caught in rapture with Isabelle Adjanis frenetic performance, overwhelmed with anguish with limbs flailing in a subway tunnel. The movie also has a wicked trailer.
Plus, at the core of the plot, there apparently is some kind of mutated, meaty creature that wreaks its influence on Adjanis character, Anna. It looks pretty revolting, too, and sort of makes me think of an inside-out, monstrous, filleted vagina.
May not exactly be the kind of thing Redenbacher had in mind when he started packaging his exploded kernals of maize, but I know hed prefer looking at mutant vaginas to listening to Crystal Castles new record any more than once.
And not to saccharinely reminisce, but heres CC when they didnt suck. -- Y
