CAVLDRON S1XTE9N <> GO ON, GIRL.
[ Now playing in Demon Tribe Hollow... Woman by John Lennon from Double Fantasy ]
Dear god. Fuck with fire, and youll eventually get burned. Fuck with alcohol, and youll eventually drown.
More on that later. Suffice to say that, for now, when I say Im gonna party, I want someone out there to stop me. Mother of god I do.
Anyway, so I have this iPod which has 59,999 tracks on it. Some of those are soundbites and samples, but most of them are actual songs, and this compilation is the result of over thirty years of music curatorship and handpicking each individual track. This is, in essence, what I feel is the best playlist in the world.
Needless to say, Ive got all kinds of shit on there, some of which I havent heard in years. Some of its superficial, but most of it is meaningful to me and/or others in some way. And I heard one of those tracks this afternoon, as I was recovering from my early night of drinking. It was audio culled from a CNN video of an interview with Lindsey Roeder, ex-wife of Scott Roeder, the man who, on May 31 2009, murdered Dr. George Tiller, hero and savior to undoubtedly countless lives.
Dr. Tiller practiced medicine where my dad was born, Wichita, Kansas, and he rightfully and publicly performed numerous abortions on women who both needed them, or simply wanted them.
Any real man (or woman) out there knows that the decision to have an abortion is one of the most difficult decisions of a womans life. I have no clue how difficult it is, and I never will. Wrong gender. But I can imagine it is a more challenging decision to make than Ill ever know.
So any dipshit anti-abortionist out there is either devoid of empathy, a hypocrite, a moron, or some combination of the three.
Dr. Tiller was heroic because he knew that, even as he saved womens lives, his life was in jeopardy, as well. He had already survived one attempt on his life when he was shot multiple times in 1993, plus his clinic was firebombed in 1986. So, it was not a total surprise when he was shot through the eye and killed by Roeder in 2009.
Shortly after the shooting, Roeders ex-wife, Lindsey, choking back tears, had this to say to CNNs cameras, as if she was speaking directly to her ex-husband:
You had no right to take another persons life. Youre not god. Youre not a judge. Youre not a jury. You say that you are protecting the unborn, that you did it for the children, that you were justified.
If you did it for the children, why did I have to fight for years to get child support to care for Nicholas?
If you did it for the children... [crying]
If you did it for the children, why wouldnt you pay for a dentist for Nicholas?
My friends, if ever there were words spoken that made me want to stamp my foot and say go on, girl, its those above by Lindsey Roeder.
So, just a few tracks to celebrate womanhood, two of them from the greatest pop songwriter that ever lived. (Please note that pop is not being used at all in a derogatory way, here. I use it as a reference to its origin simply as a truncation of the word popular. For those who might say what other kinds of songs are there?, Id counter with the fact that you could call Mozart a songwriter.) Please also note that the despicable N-word is written below out of respect for the artist, he himself having used it not in any way condoning racism, but rather to illustrate sexism.) This is especially for all the single moms out there (though I know there are plenty of great single dads; after all, for the latter part of my teenage years and early 20s, I was raised by one), and particularly to those whove been courageous enough to have abortions. I would be honored to sing your praises.
