CAVLDRON TWO <> THE PERFUME OF CYANIDE IS ALMOND BLOSSOMS.
[ Now playing in Demon Tribe Hollow... Inertiatic ESP by The Mars Volta from De-Loused in the Comatorium ]
A particularly good day at work today.
And in other news, the amazing Mars Volta have been on my mind lately, and why shouldnt they be? Forming from the ashes of the flash fire that engulfed El Paso punk stalwarts At The Drive In, the Volta is the enigmatic result of both founding fathers of ATDI with a more adventurous direction in mind.
I hate the term prog rock, so I wont use that here. (Other than that there where I just did. ) Volta is for people whose minds are as healthy as their bodies, as Peter Gabriel once put it. (In saying that, he was, however, at a concert introducing a rarely-heard b-side he wrote called I Go Swimming.)
What I mean by citing that quotation here is that Volta makes the head spin as well as the body. Theyre dynamic in all senses of the word, almost always leaving their tunes completely open to interpretation and never providing answers, only more questions.
But they can also be enjoyed on a completely visceral level, and I have to admit that Ive never seen a total personification of the spirit of music moving through the body as is captured in the acrobatics of frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala.
Awe-inspiring without a doubt, and they killed when I saw them open for Soundgarden at the L.A. Forum back on 22 July 2011. (I have to admit though that it was more fun to see them at San Diegos Soma on 28 January 2008. I was much closer to the stage, being the little fanboy that I am.)
