Last night we watched Jan Svankmajer's Alice, which is a wonderfully visceral retelling of the Alice In Wonderland story. It was so much fun to watch it with kids around. I was worried they'd find its lack of cartoonish colour and cgi slickness a bit boring. But they were enraptured by the reality of the film. Svankmajer uses stop motion animation to bring everything from a taxidermied rabbit to a disembodied lizard head to life. And the nature of that technique gives a gritty reality to the whole film.
Anyway, I could wax on about it, but if you haven't seen any of Svankmajer's films, I highly recommend checking out Alice or Little Otik.
After the kids headed to bed, poor Aethy started feeling even more wrecked from the strep throat she's been suffering and (worse) the drugs the doctor gave her. She ended up with a splitting headache that I could not vanquish with either hot lemon tea or back/neck rubs. Poor thing only slept three hours. But morning came, headache was gone, and all is well.
