This poor, emaciated golden/white American Pit, friendly as anything, followed my boyfriend into the apartment yesterday. I feel so bad for her. We gave her a bath and let her sleep with us last night. She couldn't be more than 8 months old, but seems to either be pregnant (symptom: nursing nipples), in heat, or just had puppies. Or none of the above...
Do dogs have a "period," or is this something we should get checked out? We tried to call the humane society yesterday to see if we could have her picked up -- only because our lease is about up and we're looking for a new complex (and really can't limit ourselves to non-pet friendly... since we're on a budget and what have you) -- but they were closed. I'd love to keep her -- she's the friendliest stray I've ever met. Sadly, I'm afraid she has some internal things wrong with her (stomach makes extremely odd noises -- nothing I've ever heard any of my many, various other dogs at my parents house do... she sounds as if she has a chest/lung infection when she breathes... etc.). Also, someone tried to crop her ears but did a shitty job... they left the string in (kite string)... it looks infected, but we're not sure. It also appears that she has mange of some sort, or she just gnaws herself to the skin due to the various fleas/ticks/gnats we took off her. We don't even know if she has her shots.
We don't have the money to take her to the vet either...
I don't know what to do. I want to keep her soooo bad. If we call the Humane Society again, they'll send Animal Control to come get her, then we wont know what happens to her. If we take her there, they'll tell us she'll have to be put down (first because she doesn't have her shots, second because she's a Pit, third because she most likely wont get adopted out in the allotted time since she looks so tatterred and torn) My friend (the drunken one from the previous post) called around to see if any of her extended network of pals would like her, and so far one person said they want to take a look at her. We're afraid she's gotten attached to us already since we took her in and cleaned her up... she might growl at the guy. Plus we don't know if he's even willing to take her looking like this.
I wish I had tons of cash, so I could get this dog the help she needs.

scagnetti, i didn't think twice about sheltering her. i thought almost anyone would have done so. i've taken in so many strays before, so it's just the natural thing to do. however, in the past few days, so many people have told me that they wouldn't have done that. and many more are offering to take her off our hands -- just because she isn't spayed and they want to breed for fighting. it's horrible.
starr, well, thanks. sweet of you to comment.
