Cabbage Rolls and Coffee....
...MMM MMM GOOD!
I loved the Shmenge Brothers on SCTV....the polka-playing Yosh & Sten were my heroes.
A local tv station was running the Blues Brothers movie on the weekend and despite the ham-fisted carcrash scenes there are some classic chunks of comedy in there as well as dozens of turns by great actors and musicians in secondary roles, including the wonderful John Candy. I think I was beginning to forget how much I miss his presence in the world of film and tv.
Growing up in the 70's & 80's, SCTV was gospel to me and my friends (in fact right now on my fridge I have a photocopy of a page from the Sept. 23/76 issue of TV Guide that a friend gave me, listing the debut episode of SCTV). Back in those primitive days of technology I used to sidle up to the tv speaker with my portable cassette deck and record SCTV's skits so I could play them back in the darkness late at night while waiting for sleep to kick in, giggling all the way.
Candy did his share of dud movies after SCTV folded but he had some gems that certainly made up it. Uncle Buck, of course. Splash. And I was so excited to see him bite into something more intense like his part in JFK.
So sometimes I wonder where he would have gone role-wise had he not passed away so tragically.
And BTW, if you've never seen it, try to treat yourself by finding an old copy of the Shmenge Brothers bio special, "The Last Polka"...I think it was only released on VHS back in the day so dig through the oldies but goodies section of your local shop and maybe you'll get lucky. Worth your while, if only for their tribute to Michael Jackson. Oh, and Catherine & Mary Margaret O'Hara as the Lemon Sisters!

P.S. I saw you are a photographer so I checked out your website... very impressive! The website layout is awesome and I love your portraits.
Ha ha... very well put. I think you're right it must be some sort of built in fail safe to keep us humble. Welcome to SG, fellow Torontonian.
