raining, grey, cold...quiet in the office...somber weather leads to somber thoughts...i am getting impatient...there are a lot of things in my life in various stages, but i don't want to wait anymore...the down side (if there is one) to spending a lot of time in the studio is that it is all i want to do...

it is a gray day...i contemplated some shopping. i couldn't even do that!?!?!
very sad...

finally it's friday...it's sunny, work is halfway over, absolutely no plans this weekend (thank God)...except for maybe my sister coming out to the south side for a few pints...

right now i do mostly graphic design and am working in more illustration... my background and first love is in drawing comics, which is something i am going to pursue more this year, now that i have a stable financial base from pursuing design... as for Powerman and Iron Fist, i am incredibly displeased with everything that has happened to those characters since issue #125 (the death of Iron Fist) ended the series. all the revamps and "toughening-ups" have made them quite lame... i'd love the change to do a graphic novel or mini-series setting them in the 80's in NYC that really explores the two characters instead of relying on the surface-level traits they represent. the series never took them into a serious, four to five issue battle, that's what i'd like to try, give them a group of crazy enemies to fight, put them in a fucked-up situation and explore their past in such a way that it reveals what has shaped them in the present and why its obvious that they will overcome this particular challenge...
plus, i've been studying the martial arts for ten years and i would draw all of iron fist's moves CORRECTLY instead of as if i had just watched a shitty kung-fu movie.
what kind of stuff do you do?

nothing to report...work is boring and slow...the weather is crappy...my son woke up at 4 in the morning to throw up...on a good note: the tattooist i am working with did all the linework for my sleeve, so it actually looks like a sleeve now...and he did a great fuckin job, i mean i really love it. i have also been in the studio quite...

not too much going on...nice wednesday...took a drive for lunch...ran errands in sunny elmhurst, illinois...nice town actually, they have a great sushi place...watch out for the cops, though, got a ticket there earlier in the week...of course it wasn't MY fault...
reading: " among the thugs" by bill buford
listening to: "blue cathedral" by comets on fire (that record is still kicking my ass)

thanks for the recommendations...though i'm unlikely to go. i'm not very good at going to stuff by myself. i have lured one of my friends into coming over...it will take her forever though. i just didn't want to go all the way to roger's park. No more driving today!! hope everything's okay with you guys.

painting in my studio and somewhat drunk...
hopping on the bandwagon here...

jeslynjames:
Thanks for the compliment. My upper body work was all done by Aaron Coleman of Immaculate Tattoo in Arizona.
jeslynjames:
He has all the skill. I just have the cash and the canvas. I generally only give my artist a vague idea of what I want. I figure you'll get a better tattoo if they're into what they're doing. I just find artists that I like their artwork and go from there. Wish I could be more help than that.
so my typing today is even worse...slower and more mis-spellings...reaching into my shaving kit this morning for something and what do i find but...my RAZOR...blood everywhere...so one trip to the emergency care clinic later i am sitting here with an enormous bandage on my "fuck you" finger...no stitches...because there was nothing left to stitch...look at your finger, where it is rounded, imagine a line...that is...

you know, i'm not sure how to use this thing as a proper journal...i write the most boring shit in here...so i'll stick to the immediate: listening to le tigre, trying to make a mix for the weekend loosely based on the concept of what ben sherman was in the 1960's using both old and contemporary music...thinking about how i'm going to make a "punk"...

i just got back from spending the entire afternoon with bleach, actually. he wasn't working on me, but on a friend. i'm coming out on my spring break (i go to art school in new york) to have him start a 3/4 sleeve when he's working up in MN. sad he's leaving madison.
i spent a year at a private college in madison for art education. then i took a year off and worked at a coffee shop on state street for awhile before moving out to new york to go to school for graphic design.

hmmm....can you somehow combine the labor union theme into punk rock? Or does the whole concept of anarchy reignin supreme sort of undermine the who spirit of the common man working for higher raises and better health care? Something to ponder

sick again today...in my vast experience, you can neither defeat illness by: A. drinking. i used to think you could, but then i realized it was just the hangover was worse than the illness...not to say i don't still try.

bleach is one of a handful of people i trust to tattoo me. i used to live in madison and have flown back from new york to get work from him in the past. he's moving to MN and i imagine i'll fly there to get work as well. great work, great personality, comfortable setting, cheap price...
