went by art media to pick up supplies for my typography class, including some sharpies for inking big black letters. a few years ago i was wishing sharpie would put out about 20 more colors so i wouldn't have to ever buy any other pens.
we're there.
prismacolor still has them beat for color selection with their dual-tipped pens in 144 colors, but they're $3 each and they're HUGE. sharpies 25ish colors are all available in standard and fine for $1 or dual-tip for $2. half of them can be had in retractable, and there's the angled chisel-tips for calligraphy. so they're much more portable, and not just because there's a quarter of the color selection. granted, they have less ink, but they cost a third as much, so if i'm buying new pens twice as often, but carrying 1/2 as much mass with me, that's worth it.
i could honestly do all my hand coloring with sharpies now. sure, it's only 25 colors, but there's a fair bit of mixing you can do to add to the palette, and if you need to carry more than 25 pens to get all the colors you need, why the hell are you coloring in pen? go get photoshop already. even prismacolor's palette of 140ish isn't going to be right for every situation. using just sharpies forces me to work with what i have instead of constantly searching for alternate brands and colors.
about the only improvement they ought to do now is come out with a micro-fine tip for ridiculous detailing, and maybe a couple more colors to round out the palette. a 'faded' version of all the standard colors would be neat. they've got lighter tones but they're all neon or pastel. i want something more like the standard colors put through the wash too many times. additionally, a nice burnt orange/red orange would be cool, and grey would be very useful for outlining sketches.
there's supposed to be four different metallic colors from what i've read; silver, gold, bronze, and i think one other, but i've only ever seen silver. those other two or three metallics would make it almost 30 colors in the palette, with half a dozen different pen styles including the absurd new 'professional grade' black with yellow rubber grip, rubberized cap so it's easy to remove while wearing gloves, larger more durable nib, more ink, and oval shape so it won't roll off things. that sucker is about $4 at target and is big enough you could kill a man with it.
