I'm working as an expo at a restaurant, and it's pretty enjoyable, but the tops of my hands are already fried from them spending a lot of time under the heat lights we tray up orders underneath. For a while it was like a stupid bad sun burn, but now it's just really dry and it's splitting a little in places. Kinda looks like I have either hives or am starting to show signs of ebola.
I got stuff to put on it, and it helps a little, but I'm not worried at all about it. My hands just weren't used to expo work, so there's some small amount of pain in the adjustment, but soon I'll have a better method and rhythm that helps cut down on problems and my hands will toughen up. It's what happens when you work in a restaurant.
I'm also glad I read Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, because it helped my outlook on attitudes and such greatly. I don't work anywhere special or classy (it's little more than fast food+, honestly, with a huge focus on speed rather than fine dining or anything), but it still holds true that if you aren't able to take shit from the people there and give it right back, you should be looking for a new line of work.
