THE 2004 FLORIDA FILM FESTIVAL
march 5th through march 14th
the enzian theater and regal winter park village 20
orlando, FL
i have been attending FFF since the summer of 1998. it is always the highlight of my year. i've seen the regional premieres of 'pi' and 'the blair witch project'. i've met oliver stone, christopher walken, bruce campbell, jason lee and a dozen other names i could fire off, but im not, because that would be in bad taste
anyway. the lineup for this years festivities was just posted at midnight. here are a few of the highlights:
regional premiere of 'dogville', the new film by lars von trier, starring nicole kidman. it is an outrageous, violent melodrama that has been leaving trail of awe and controversy in its wake. right now, the only place you could hope to see it outside of NY or LA is at a festival
'code 46', directed by michael winterbottom (director of '24 hour party people'), starring tim robbins and samantha morton. it takes place in the future, it takes place in shanghai, and tim robbins has a virus that allows him to read minds. did i mention it's a drama?
a screening of a new (new? fucking HUGE!) print of federico fellini's 'i vitelloni'. flex your serious cineast muscle at this one
'hair high', the new animated feature by bill plympton
the unedited version of 'zombi 2' by lucio fulci. made in italy in 1979, it is generally regarded by those who know about these sorts of things as one of the most obscenely violent films ever made (bowel-letting, zombie vs. shark, etc.)
'neverland: the rise and fall of the symbionese liberation army', a documentary about the SLA (well, duh.)
'bomb the system', a movie about a young graffiti writer in lower manhattan torn between going straight and staying in the gutter. scored by radiohead and dj spooky.
regional premiere of 'end of the century: the story of the ramones', by michael gramaglia
the mvwire.com music video showcase: a 90 minute long program of music videos by artists such as hot hot heat, the rise, the chemical brothers, pitch black, the white stripes, the rapture, fischerspooner and madlib
the annual midnight shorts program. a dozen and a half of the most abominably offensive short films ever made, most of which are animated (i saw the 'aqua teen hunger force' pilot in the summer of 2000 at the MSP, 6 months before it originally aired on cartoon network)
there will be over 140 features shown at 3 different venues over 8 days. they have yet to announce the lineup of special guests, but needless to say i will be updating this entry as more news comes down the wire
