- what I'm going to be up to for the next 4 months -
WHAT IF THERE WAS A COMPANY, A COMPANY WHOSE WHOLE DESIGN ETHIC WAS SIMPLY TO PRODUCE CLOTHING OF EXCELLENT QUALITY AND REJECTED RATIONAL THOUGHT IN SEARCH OF A TIMELESS STYLE. THERE IS AND IT IS CALLED VOLCOM.
WE ALL KNOW THAT FOR YEARS SKATE COMPANIES AND SHOE COMPANIES HAVE STRIVED FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE, AND THROUGH FEEDBACK, ANTHROPOMETRIC RESEARCH AND TESTING HAVE DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGIES AND SKILLS THAT HAVE NOT ONLY SPAWNED GREATER QUALITY SKATE PRODUCTS, BUT THOSE WITH TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES. THESE ADVANCES NO MATTER HOW SUBTLE HAVE INCREASED LONGEVITY, COMFORT, SUPPORT AND CONTROL, BUT WITHOUT LOSS OF FREEDOM/RANGE OF MOVEMENT.
I BELIEVE THAT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE STI (SOLE TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE) A PERFECT BALANCE OF RANGE OF MOVEMENT COULD BE ESTABLISHED. THROUGH IDENTIFICATION OF AREAS THAT RECEIVE THE MOST WEAR AND TEAR, AND OTHER DATA A RANGE OF PRODUCTS COULD BE DESIGNED THAT WITHOUT UNDULY INCREASING THE RETAIL PRICE, COULD BE BOTH SUPERIORLY SUITED TO SKATING AND DOWNTIME. THE PIECES OF CLOTHING COULD BE MADE OF ENGINEERED FABRICS AND TECHNOLOGICALLY SUPERIOR MATERIALS, WITH A FOCUS FOR MAKING CLOTHING FOR VARYING ENVIRONMENTS, CLIMATES AND AN ACCESSORIES RANGE TO MATCH AND FACILITATE FEATURES THAT MAY HAVE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE GARMENTS FOR EASE OF USAGE.
THE DESIGNS SHOULD NOT RESEMBLE A KIT OR UNIFORM OF ANY KIND FOR THAT GOES AGAINST THE FUNDAMENTAL IDEALS OF SELF EXPRESSION AND AND INDIVIDUALITY THAT ARE NOT ONLY A CORNERSTONE OF THE BRAND VOLCOM, BUT ARE ALSO A PILLAR OF THE EXTREME SPORTS. WHERE POSSIBLE PROFESSIONALS, AND THE TARGET MARKET SHOULD BE CONSULTED ABOUT DESIGN DETAILS.
ALSO THE RANGE SHOULD MINIMISE IF NOT ERADICATE THE POSSIBILITY THAT ONE WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE INTO OR OUT OF THIS CLOTHING WITHIN THE SCENARIOS COMMON (WITHIN REASON) TO THE END USERS EVERYDAY LIFE. INITIALLY THIS COULD BE LAUNCHED AS A RANGE AND THEN YOU COULD FOCUS THE COMPANY IN 2 DIRECTIONS. BOTH DESIGNED AND ENGINEERED GARMENTS, MUCH AS THE COMPANY (VOLCOM) IS BEGINNING TO DO NOW WITH THE CO-OPERATIVE JEANS RANGE AND THE GUEST ARTIST OZZIE WRIGHT DESIGNED TOPS.
I AM NOT SUGGESTING THAT IF THIS LINE WERE LAUNCHED BY A NEW COMPANY IT WOULD BE AT ALL AS SUCCESSFUL THEN IF IT WERE LAUNCHED UNDER AN ALREADY ESTABLISHED MARKET LEADER. THAT IS WHY THIS LINE WILL BE AIMED TO BE PRODUCED AND SOLD UNDER THE VOLCOM LABEL. IN FACT, THE ELEMENT OF STYLE THAT IS ALREADY ASSOCIATED WITH SOME COMPANIES WOULD PROBABLY BE THE DECIDER FOR THE AVERAGE BUYER ONCE THE PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED AND OTHER COMPANIES BEGIN TO EMULATE THE IMPROVED DESIGN FEATURES. ONCE LAUNCHED AN OLIGOPOLY COULD ONLY BE ESTABLISHED IF SUFFICIENT COPYRIGHT OF DESIGN FEATURES, MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES USED THAT PREVENTS ANOTHER MANUFACTURER FROM PRODUCING ANYTHING THAT COULD COMPETE WITHOUT INFRINGING COPYRIGHT.
SIMPLY:
O USING RESEARCH ON ANTHROPOMETRICS PRODUCE A RANGE OF PERFECT SKATING SPECIFICATIONS.
O DESIGN TECHNOLOGICALLY SUPERIOR CLOTHING WITHOUT LOOSING INDIVIDUALITY OR STYLE.
O PRODUCE A RANGE OF ACCESSORIES, BAGS AND MAYBE EVEN SHOES THAT FULLY FACILITATE THE RANGE AND ITS ETHIC.
O TRY NOT TO INCREASE THE PRICE OF THE GARMENTS UNLESS IT IS NECESSARY.

Stereo Skateboards capsule collection:
Stereo skateboards is an internationally renowned company based on a principal of self expression through film, music, television, art, photography and skateboard decks (the concave wooden plank), not to mention through skateboarding itself.
History:
Confucius says: it is important to know where you came from so that you know where you are going.
In 1991 Jason lee was behind possibly one of the most influential skate movies of the decade, Blind: Video Days, his editing techniques, use of music, filming techniques and tricks have helped establish standards and conventions that without Blind: Video Days may never have come to be.
Lee Left Blind Skateboards Shortly after, and began Stereo Skateboards
When the company was originally founded, this idea was one of self expression, exploration, inventiveness & pushing the boundaries of what could be done. Originally started by Jason Lee and Chris Pastras, both were innovators in every way, from the essence of their skateboarding to the Art and Music Shows they would privately fund. . .
In the Mid 90s the idea was temporarily shut down, Lee, wanting to go into acting (hed been working as a pro-skater since he was 13), after the break that was Mallrats in 95, the tailor-written part of street savvy, eccentrically dressed, quintessentially male; Brodie Bruce became even more of a cult icon overnight .
However In 2000, rumours began of the reformation of Stereo, despite successful film roles in Vanilla Sky, Almost Famous and Dogma (Another Kevin Smith Film), Lee Stepped back more and more from the limelight, looking after his new baby, getting back into the skate industry, remembering what it was that he loved about riding a board, expressing himself through art, photography, film and graphic design. Only to occasionally re-surface in the most random of occasions such as Syndrome in the Pixar film; The Incredibles (2004). Lee favoured jobs that wouldnt mean he had to be away for months without end. He directed a music video for Beck, and had a bit part in yet another Kevin Smith Film Jersey Girl, far from inactive he has 2 title roles in films that should be out this year.
In 2001 Chris Pastras and Jason Lee officially put a stop to rumours and officially re-launched the Stereo Sound Agency, slowly acquiring artists, photographers, skateboarders , so that, as of 28.01.05 consist of half a dozen handpicked International Stereo Sound Agents, bringing their own influences from music, art and skateboarding.
Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the trouble makers. The round pegs in the square holes, the ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them, because they change things, they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.

Im rather unsurprisingly applying for work with them for my industry placement year. I would like to diversify and Tailor what is essentially a clothing heavy portfolio, with examples of my photography, artwork, and deck designs. However, only a limited amount of these exist, so I put forward that for my second self initiated brief I expand my portfolio with professionally presented artwork, deck designs, and photography.
I have some examples of this because this is a sector of industry that has long enticed me. However, the quality and relevance is a fraction of that which I would be able to do now.
Meaning that for this project I shall produce:
o A Short range of possible smart/casual clothing based of observations in trends, competitors, promotion of product/Brand, and S+D.
o A variety of various possible deck designs with at least 2 examples per range.
o Photography and Artwork that corresponds with and accentuates the mood of the clothing/decks.
o All presented professionally, and in a format that can be broadcast/send or viewed from overseas but leaves no subsequent explanation necessary,
I WILL REQUIRE AS MUCH HELP AND ASSISTANCE AS CAN BE OFFERED, JUST DON'T STEAL MY IDEAS
