5 questions from A. Killebrew
1. Can you tell us a little about your self. who are you and what do you do?
Well, I do a lot of things- You might say I'm a jerk of all trades. Musically, I play bass for Billy Joe Winghead- We're a white trash psychobilly band outta Oklahoma. Our website is at www.winghead.com . Before that, I was in a number of garage punk bands that never did anything, and before that, I did some folky stuff on acoustic guitar and harmonice. I play the saw now also- I have 3 saws that are flamejobbed, and I play them with a bow, like a fiddle. It's Very strange sounding. Some folks love it, and some hate it.
I am a bona fide beef jerky baron- I sell my own line of beef jerky, called "Screamin Steven's Bombastic Beef Jerky" my hot flavor is called the "CHRONIC", as a testament to the many nights I sat down with my homemade stuff in a big ziplock bag, weighing up 1 and 2 oz. bags on my digital scales.the jerky caught on in the clubs we played, I sold homemade for a couple of years, then got nice and legal and USDA inspected and all that. You can read about it at either the auntidas.com or the winghead.com pageI ship all over, so anybody having a real jerkyfit right now should contact me immediately
I also do screenprinting; I have a press and oven in my garage, and tend to do more creative stuff in small numbers, than big orders of prints I care nothing about. I've got a number of prints on the myspace group I started, at http://groups.myspace.com/tshirtshack It's something I started out doing for the band years ago, and it turned into a (albeit small) source of income for me.
I also make and refinish furniture with my wife Sal- We do custom modified furniture pieces that are mostly obtained from thrift stores, and also make furniture from scratch. Probably my favorite piece is my coffin table, a coffee table made in the shape of a pine box.
I do photography as well; I shoot mostly cars, bands, and girls, and frequently all three at the same time! I shoot digital, and tend to work with light and shadow a lot. My Model Mayhem web address is http://modelmayhem.com/member.php?id=19076
I've done glasswork most my life, started when I was sixteen cutting glass in a shop in Houston TX. Of course I incorporate a lot of glass into my furniture creations, and use it in a variety of other ways, too
I am also the head honcho of the First Anointed Reformed Church of Elvis, a musical ministry in which the spirit of Rock N Roll goes through E, through me, and to thee, where the churches are the smoky bars full of people listening to live music, where the congregation consists of girls in tight skirts and pants shaking their asses, and guys dancing around checking them out, spilling their beer and celebrating livin', lovin' and anything else that makes ya feel alive you can read the manifesto and more about the church at http://groups.myspace.com/FARCE
2. What are some of your influences? for both art and music.
I love the surrealists; Dali, Man Ray, Marcel DuChamp, Escher, and many others also love pinup art & photography, fetish/bondage stuff, particularly Kearn and Eric Kroll I like a lot of current artists as well
Music? I grew up listening to my older brother's and sister's stuff, which ranged from surf/lounge to acid rock I've always gravitated to stuff that was both irreverent and humorous, and also theatrical- Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, Spike Jones, Bowie, all that. I started listening to punk and new wave in the late 70s and really found my niche in the stuff bands from the Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks to bands like the B-52s and DEVO were doing.
3. With easter coming up, could you tell us a little about black saturday? and is it hard to play bass in a leather mask and bunny ears?
Black Saturday was coined by our front man John Manson as the day between good Friday and easter Sunday; as Manson puts it, if jesus was crucified on good Friday and raised from the dead on easter Sunday, then Black Saturday is the one day of the year that jesus is really and truly in the ground dead, so anything goes so everyone pull out the stops and party- no ones watching! The latex bondage mask and rabbit ears I wear on Black Saturday is not too bad; I usually lose it halfway through the set, then I'm down to just my rubber skivvies, cowboy boots and tassels hanging from my nipple rings.. It's a family show, definitely
4. Do you have anything coming up or coming out that you would like to let us all know about?
Man, that sounds like a dirty question We're in the process of compiling a new passel of songs for our next CD, unnamed at this point We'll be playing the Heavy Rebel Weekender in Winston Salem NC this July 8th weekend, and touring up the East Coast the Week after.. You can follow any news on the various websites
5. ok here's the million dollar question.. in a 4 way battle royal who would win? Lemmy, Keith Richards, Elvis, or Hank Sr. ?
In the first Anointed Reformed Church hierarchy, Lemmy and Keith Richards are both lesser deities; so they can't really overcome E. or H. Hank Sr. is kind of comparable to John the Baptist, in that he helped pave the way for the King So in my book It'd have to be Elvis
