Ah, SG...without you where else would I go when I'm in flight to places in Warcraft?
As you may have noticed, I'm not very good at keeping up a blog...not here...not on MySpace...not anywhere...but then again, does anyone really come to this site for the purpose of blogging?...and I use MySpace as a place to keep track of unsigned bands mostly...oh well...
Been busy with work and family drama...but got to see a KICK ASS show on Friday night at the Whisky. It was the Genitorturers's show, but I was going primarily for the almighty MORTIIS and also for Skumlove (who it was a special show for, as it was Robyn Sin's last show with the band). Other than having to pee and being willing to move and therefore lose my spot upfront, it was one of the best shows I've been to in the past year. Here's a rundown of the evening:
1st band: Soul Destruction
A band from Washington, by what I overheard. They were ok...not entirely memorable...had a female Asian vocalist...cool Fright Catalog-ish Halloween grave/skull/creepy gate-type props...
2nd band: Kickstart Devils
They played like 20 songs!...that all sounded the same! A punk band that wore sunglasses and the durmmer had shiny devil horns...
3rd band: Alpha Shemale
Ah, Alpha Shemale. Whatever image you conjure in your mind as to what this band might be like just given the name, you're probably right. It's like, um, electronic, house, 2 Live Crew on acid...or as they describe themselves on their MySpace page: "Cyber Circus Freak Slut Music"... How can you go wrong with lyrics like "Kickstart that cooter motor" or " P U S S Y, mine is pink and never dry / F I S T, put your fist inside of me"...? It was fuckin' weird to say the least, but everyone got a kick out of it and it was entertaining as Hell to watch...
4th band Krell
This is one of those bands that sends out random friend requests to people on MySpace...kinda annoying. Their souncheck seemed like it was longest of the evening and whenever the sound guy would ask one person to play something to check a level, the other guys would start playing something... Decent riffs, not memorable, but catchy when you hear them... The bassist was a dick...trying to be too much of a rock star and not realizing that he's just in some shitty band that will never go anywhere... I get the feeling this band is going for the 'evil' approach but they need to work on their image and write lyrics with a tad more substance (because I get the feeling they're trying to be taken seriously)...you couldn't make out 90% of what the vocalist was singing and it's not like he was doing some death metal growl...but enough about these 'tards...
5th band: Skumlove
As usual, good performance by Skumlove. It was (the band's co-founding guitarist) Robyn Sin's last show with the band...apparently he's moving out of state...to Iowa, I think... So they had Robyn up playing along with new guitarist Tasha... That kinda took me back to the first time I saw Skumlove when Dino Cazares was in the band. They've been playing with just Robyn on guitar for some time now and the band has sounded great, but there's something about having two guitarists...kicks the energy level up...
6th band: MORTIIS!!!!
I still can't believe I was right up front at a Mortiis show. This guy rarely tours the U.S. ... I first saw him at the Blackest of the Tour last year (before then he had only toured the U.S. once before many years ago)...Skumlove also played on the Blackest of the Black...so this was like deja vu... This guy is fucking awesome...just pure energy and aggression...he never stopped from the beginning of the show to the very end... He came out with his troll mask and ears on, but took them off less than halfway through...awesome to have him screaming his lungs out right in front of me...it was a trip. What was also cool is that there were more people there with Mortiis shirts on than there were people representing Genitorturers... I would say his performance alone made this one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
7th band: Genitorturers
I actually left right after Mortiis ended, so nothing to report here! I've actually never heard any of the Genitorturers tunes and it felt good to end the evening on a high note...and it was midnight...I worked all day and I'm getting old...I need to sleep...
So that's Scott's good excitement for the week...
This is my new favorite song!:
