Scott: Post-GWAR Pics
* * * END UPDATE * * *
Yes, Scott is LAME...didn't get around to getting those Post-GWAR pics ready last night...so hopefully that will happen tonight before WARCRAFT! Although I did finish my weekend in review...I didn't want to post it until I had the pictures, but fuck it...I'm posting it now because I need to get it out before it becomes completely irrelevant...besides, they are just images of me covered in fluids. So here's everything I had to say yesterday in its entirety:
* * * BEGIN TRANSMISSION * * *
What Im listening to right now: Apocalyptica
Oooook, sothe weekendwhere to begin?
November 19, Saturday - Skumlove
What I listened to on the way to the venue: Rammstein
I attended this show with my friend Jade. Skum was playing the Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip. We arrived at the venue around 9:30PMgot some booze (the lady had a beer, Scott had whisky)and stood through some opening bands last three songs (one of which I couldve sworn the singer said was Dream of Semenbut the Whiskys sound system sucks, so I couldnt really hear what the guy saidbut regardless of what it was titled, it sucked the nut). Then some band called Cheva playeddecent opener, but its not like Im going to recommend that you check out their website, or myspace page, or whatever you crazy kids have these days. After that was the mighty Skumlove (which, as I mentioned in the post regarding the Blackest of the Black concert, is the name of the vocalist and the bandsoooo, likeCher?...hehehe). They played an awesome, 10 song setand this was the best Ive ever heard the permanent line-upTHE best would have to be two years ago when the following musicians filled far before a permanent group was attempted: along with Skumlove co-founder Robin Syn on guitar there was Dino Cazares (Fear Factory, Asesino) on guitar, Justin Bennett (Professional Murder Music) on drums, and Cypress Hills bassist (whose name escapes me at the moment)
The show was being played to celebrate Skums daughters 16th birthdayand he even serenaded her with a new song called Sweet 666 Teenvery cool shite. When they finished their usual closer of I Am Your God, the drummer threw his sticks into the crowdI looked down so the flying projectiles wouldnt hit me in the eye or whatever, and one of the sticks just sort of fell into my armsso I gave it to Jadethen I swiped each of us a set list. One more band played after SkumI dont know what they were calledbut it started with Sevenso Seven Something or Otherehwhateverthey sucked...they were supposed to be the first bandthat played that night but they got bumped to last. Before they even played one note the vocalist went into this whole big speech about how everything they do is to honor Che Guevara and blah, blah, blahIm not going to say if I agree or disagree with this guys views, but Im of this philosophy: Dont say it, play it! Its past midnight, fucker! My brain is not in the mood for a lecture! Unless, youre Dave Brockie So we decided to leave, but before we did I went to go buy a Skumlove shirt (Ive got to support the bands I like!) and it was sold to me by Skummy himself! He even sold me a copy of their demo CD (which Ive had for two years)but this is actually a reissue of their demo with two remixesI generally HATE remixes and to be honest, the ones on this disc arent that goodbut it was Skumlove and he cut me a dealand like I was saying: I support the bands I like! Ill gladly hand over a few extra bucks to held fund their operation.
So we finally left and went our separate ways. Skumlove sounded great and I had a keen time.
What I listened to on the way home: Skumlove
November 20, Sunday - GWAR
What I listened to on the way to the venue: The Life Aquatic Soundtrack, Johnny Cash
I went to this show alone. I was tired and even had a bit of a fever. So I arrived what I consider to be a little latethere were four bands playing that night (including GWAR) and I only missed one (MensreaCory Smoots bandhes Flattus in GWAR). I normally try to get to the venue early for GWAR...and I should have considering this is their 20th anniversary tour...but...um...yeah... I got there just in time for A Dozen Furies and after them was Devildriverboth bands were just okbut they lean more towards that typical American metal soundand they both tried the whole I want the whole pit area to make one giant circle pit dealugghlamealthough on a side note, and I may have mentioned this before, but one of the coolest things Ive seen at a concert was when I saw Slipknot on their Pledge of Allegiance tour at the L.A. ForumI was in the very back row of the colonnade, up against the wall, so I got a good view of the entire arena. Corey Taylor got the ENTIRE FORUM FLOOR to create a giant circle pitnow that was an impressive sightlater on that evening the band also got practically half the arena audience sitting in the stands/loge/colonnade area to rush the floor during Spit it Outpeople were knocking over security guards, jumping over railingscreating what was probably the biggest fire hazard EVERbut I digress So yeah, the two GWAR openers were nothing to really write home to Mom aboutand I hate it when bands go into the whole So how many of you have heard of us? Seen us live? Etcbecause I dont caregive me a reason to remember you and WANT to see you on my own volition, damn itDevildrivers bassist was pretty cool though. I moseyed into the pit for the openers (but wasnt a part of the moshing action)and then I couldnt escape the pit afterwards as much as I wanted to. If theres one thing Id like to ask GWAR fans: ever heard of a thing called SOAP???
So GWAR finally hits the stage, the place gets INSANE as usual and I got sprayed by fake blood, fake bile, piss from Oderuss cuttlefish. There were fewer theatrics this time around and more of them just rockinwhich is cool. Foam latex celebrities they mutilated: The Pope, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Sharon Osbourne, Michael Jacksonthere were also appearances by some four foot tall triangular bird monster thingie that Ive never seen before as well as Bonesnapper the Christmas troll! A good, mixed setthey played something from every album except from Carnival of Chaos (of course) and This Toilet Earth (sadly). Songs included (in no particular order): The Horror of Yig, Love Surgery, The Salaminizer, Crush Kill Destroy, Whargoul, Battle Lust, Babyraper, Krosstika, Immortal Corrupter, The Road Behind, Womb With a View, Bring Back the Bomband they closed with a long-ass medley that included bits and pieces from almost every song on their Hell-O album.
So after the show I went to the merch booth, bought a 20 Years of Fucking Torment tour shirt and a limited DVD of a DBX performance in San Francisco...DBX is a silly punk side project consisting of the core members of GWAR: Dave Brockie, Mike Derks, and Brad Roberts (or Oderus Urungus, Balsac the Jaws O Death, and Jizmak Da Gusha, respectively)...I parked several blocks away from the venue (it is better that way...the Key Club parking lot is Hell to get out of at the end of the night)...and Ive made the trek before...its always interesting to walk down Sunset and be drenched from head to toe with fake bodily fluids, looking like I just murdered someone...even though it was like past midnight, theres still stuff happening on the Sunset Strip...so it was fun to pass by the trendy folks getting into their BMWs looking the way I did.
When I got home, first I took my video camera to capture Scott in Post-GWAR state...then I hit the shower and it took me about an hour twenty minutes to fully get all the crap off of me...after all, I had work in the morning and as tempting as it would be to walk in the office looking the way I did...well, you know how that goes... The worst part was probably my hair....I had to shampoo several times before there was no trace of green and black fluid left...its also a good thing I dont wear hard lens contacts because the GWAR fluid stained my disposable lenses...I had one green and one blue eye by the end of the night. Also, after getting all the stuff off of my face I discovered that I had like a million blackheads...it was gnarly...so I picked a few choice onees and then went on the hunt for some kind of face scrubbing/acne/skin clearing whatever. I found some Neutrogena Skin Clearing gel that was AWESOME. Sure, it burned when I rubbed it in and my face felt like it was going to melt off (which I assumed meeant that it was working)...but after I rinsed my face my skin was totally clear! I liked Neutrogena products before but now I am a firm believer. So as as I possibly could...I slept...
What I listened to on the way home: Electric Six
November 21, Monday - Buckethead
What I listened to on the way to the venue: Buckethead
I almost didnt go to this show. I was exhausted...especially after going to the physically draining and exhausting GWAR show combined with a lack of sleep. But I figured I would at least make an appearance and if I got too tired then I would just leave. On the ticket, it said that the doors opened at 7:00PM and the show started at 8:00PM...and I knew there was one opening act called Bad Acid Trip. So I get there...and theres a sign on the door of the venue stating that doors opened at 8:00PM, BAT was going on at 9:00PM and Buckethead would go on at 10:15PM. But first I had to go through the whole frisk and metal detector wand thing...which was all good, but the tiny-ass little metal Skechers S logo on the back of my shoe was making that wand go off. So the security asks me Is there anything in your boot I should know about?...tempted was I to say Yeah, my foot...but I resisted being a total smart-ass, said no and even offered to take off my shoes if the guy really wanted to know...BAT didnt go on until 9:30PM and Buckethead didnt go on until 10:30PM. BAT was...um...well, it was sort of amusing to watch the singer...but not to listen to him. Props to the guitar player for wearing a GWAR shirt!
So, as aforementioned, the almighty Buckethead hit the stage at 10:30PM. He opened with Welcome to Bucketheadland from the Giant Robot album. It was absolutely mesmerizing to watch this man play guitar. The guys well over 6 feet tell, wears a kabuki mask and a KFC bucket (with the word FUNERAL scripted on it) on his head...and he plays guitar more technically proficient than anyone Ive ever seen. If I described every crazy move he did with his guitar and still managed to play without missing a note, this would be a much much much longer journal entry than it already is. So here are some highlights: whislt fretting with his left hand, he twirled nunchuks with his right...and he is DAMN GOOD with those nunchuks... There were times when he didnt have a part to play or between songs he would turn on a backing track and just go to town with those nunchuks...or he would stop and do the robot...or run around the stage with a stuffed, realistic looking chicken puppet on his hand amusing the front row audience members with it. At one point he even freaked out and karate kicked a foam head and stuffed chicken that were sitting on his amp and effects units on the back of the stage. He even used a fake machete as a pick at one point. After playing for an hour and ten minutes, he took a break that lasted a little less than twenty minutes and then returned to play until 1:00AM. Some interesting musical tidbits you all should know that he played between his own pieces or during extended jam versions of his songs included: the themes from Star Wars, Its a Small World, Nightmare Before Christmas...as well as A Pirates Life for Me, parts of Ozzys Crazy Train (played BETTER than Randy Rhoads, believe it or not), Hendrixs Foxy Lady. He played some stuff off of Colma which is one of my most favorite Buckethead albums (its a beautiful and more relaxed, ambient effort)...but I suppose more importantly, he played Nottingham Lace which is seriously my most favorite Buckethead track of all time. I dont think there are enough words to decribe how amazing and surreal this concert experience was. If I had to make a Top Ten concerts of all time list, this would go on there...its been a good year for shows!
Of course I hit up the merch booth...it was nice to see some CORNBUGS CDs there (which is a Buckethead side project with Bill Moseley)...I didnt buy any Bugs discs though...because I already have them all, including the re-masters (all of which are signed by Bill Moseley!). Too bad Buckethead didnt play any Bugs tracks...but then again, it was a Buckethead show and not a Cornbugs show... So I bought two shirts and some CDs...including one that was exclusive to this tour called Inbred Mountain. Then I made my way home...went to sleep, woke up late, made it into work about fifteen minutes late...so that was Scotts concert-going weekend! Im going to sleep now.
What I listened to on the way home: Deli Creeps, Buckethead
