Hot damn. What an awesome weekend! I started writing this journal entry when I got back from Priest Feast, but it started getting lengthy, so I decide to finish and post it today. I am DYING to talk about the Feast, but can't resist the seeming necessity to document this past weekend in chronological order.
October 29, Saturday - Blackest of the Black
The Blackest of the Black concert at the Gibson Amphitheatre on Saturday was awesome! Skumlove played first, and at 6:15 the place was scarcely populated with people. Regardless, they put on awesome show. It was so kick ass to see them play at that big of a venue. Although I will say that I think they're better suited for the club environment. I'm not even sure how to put this in words. In no way am I saying that they're not good enough to place venues that big on a regular basis...to me they just seem like an intimate show kind of band...besides, it's cooler to see them all up close anyway. But I digress, sort of...I felt bad for Skumlove because they have an industrial electronica sound which doesn't really appeal to the black/death metal crowd. I thought they rocked, but after each song there was a gaggle of jackasses who kept yelling out "You suck"...and I was one of very few people applauding...but it was an awesome 20 minute set and they played 5 songs.
Next up was Mortiis. He also only got 20 minutes and his songs are a bit longer, so he played 4 numbers...all "The Grudge" era stuff. I'm so grateful for what I got to see because it not only kicked ass, it raped and slayed ass. What an amazing band to see live. I hope Mortiis does his own U.S. tour sometime soon!
Next up was Himsa, a Seattle metal band that once again reaffirmed my lack of faith in American metal. But enough about them for the mighty Behemoth were up next. They're an absolutely amazing black metal band from Poland. I'm actually listening to their Demigod album as I'm typing this. Basically, if Behemoth was not on after Mortiis, I would have left after Mortiis...which means I would've left the venue after being there for only an hour and a half...so thank you, Behemoth! I didn't stick around for Chimara or Danzig, but by what I heard I didn't miss much.
October 30, Sunday - Priest Feast
I would have to say that if I had to compile a list of the best concerts I ever went to, this show would make the list. Anthrax had already started playing by the time I reached the arena floor. They were ok. Although I kept thinking about that episode of Married with Children they were in...you know, the one where they ate the mystery package in the fridge...
While they were setting up Rob Zombie, there were these two girls in the loge who were flashing the arena floor...which didn't take long for the whole arean to be captivated by this. Even the guy working the lights shined a spotlight on them. There was flashing, making out, the girls sucking on each others's breasts, spanking...this went on for a few minutes until a security guard came by and escorted them out. But apparently they only got a stern talking to because they came back out a few minutes later but remained well-behaved for the rest of the show.
Rob Zombie was FUCKING AMAZING. I've seen him live a few times now and this was the best time yet. The band has never sounded better. It's the same touring lineup he used Ozzfest 2005, which means that I once again got to see John 5 playing guitar for Rob Zombie. I read a Rob Zombie interview a while back where he said he wanted to get a new band together and have his next album be a scary record. By that time John 5 had left Marilyn Manson and I had always hoped that John would hook up with Rob as he would go well with Zombie's music and style, so to see him actually playing with Rob is just mindblowing to me. The BEST part of the set and what I consider one of my most favorite concert experiences ever is that Rob Zombie played the track "House of 1,000 Corpses" from his Sinister Urge album and the soundtrack of the movie of the same name. It's such an awesome song and I've always hoped to hear it live. In fact, if I may talk more about John 5 (and this may sound weird but...), I always had a fantasy that if Marilyn Manson ever covered a Zombie song, it would be "House of 1,000 Corpses" just so I could hear John 5 playing it...but hearing John 5 play it with Zombie is just a million fucking times better! Scott's concert fantasy has been fulfilled. The set consisted of (in no particular order): Sinners, Inc., Demon Speeding, Dead Girl Superstar, Living Dead Girl, Super Charger Heaven, Superbeast, More Human Than Human, Electric Head Pt. 1, House of 1,000 Corpses, Feel So Numb, Demonoid Phenomenon, Never Gonna Stop (The Red Red Kroovy), Dragula, Thunder Kiss 65...I don't think I missed anything...
Ok, now it was time for Judas Priest. I felt like they played so much material that I know I'm forgetting a few tunes here, but they definitely opened with Hellion/Electric Eye, followed by (in no particular order): Metal Gods, Judas Rising, Breaking the Law, Diamonds & Rust, Turbo Lover, Touch of Evil, Worth Fighting For, Hellrider, Victim of Changes, Painkiller, Hell Bent for Leather, Living After Midnight...my friend and I left right after Living After Midnight...we were tired, had work in the morning, wanted to beat the clusterfuck of people exiting the arena and the ensuing traffic. But I'm guessing one of the last songs (if not the last) was You've Got Another Thing Coming. Not too much amusing crowd stuff going on other than some moshing and a lady doing what I can only describe as 'snake dancing.' Hmmm...I do think it's great that Priest have been doing this for 30+ years and they still KICK ASS. They could wipe their ass with any of the new bands out there today. Whenever I hear Rob Halford, I'm always amazed that that voice can come out of a human being...well, I guess when you're a metal god... But yeah, definitely a keen show and one of the best experiences of my life...even greater than sex!
